Super Frelon retires
The French Navy is retiring its last SA321G Super Frelon search and rescue helicopters.
30-Apr-2010
April 30: The French Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (Aeronavale) retires its last SA321G Super Frelon search and rescue helicopters today, ending over 40 years of operations with the type.
Based at Naval Air Station Lanvéoc-Poulmic in Brittany, the last four aircraft belonging to 32 Flotille will be retired and temporarily replaced with two Eurocopter EC225 Super Pumas until its intended replacement, the NHIndustries NH90, is ready.
Super Frelons have saved more than 2,000 people over the years, but increasing maintenance demands have led to the type’s withdrawal. Entering service in 1965, 25 Super Frelons were acquired by the Aeronavale and will be replaced by 27 NH90 NFH helicopters from 2011.
