Scramble 373 is out now!

Post by Melchior Timmers »

Hi all,

The June 2010 issue of Scramble has been released this week!

In this month's edition, we have special features about:

- RAF Shawbury
Being the second busiest military airfield in the UK (RAF Valley is no.1) should make RAF Shawbury attractive enough to visit while visiting the UK. But the biggest attraction to Shawbury for most of us is the large storage of surplus aircraft and helicopters inside special de-humidified hangars. To provide outsiders a look into these hangars, dedicated base tours are organised a couple throughout the year. Our editors joined thetour of 28 April and reported all aircraft and helicopters on scene.

- Haïti: Part 3 - MINUSTAH
In the final part of our trilogy on Haïti we report on the Mission des Nations Unies pour la Stabilisation en Haïti (MINUSTAH). Although being the first independent nation in Latin America and the only nation born from a slave revolt, the instability of the government in Haïti and the total of 32 coups which occurred during its 200 years of existence asked for international aid and stability forces on many occasions. The most recent call for international assistance by the government was on 24 February 2004. In reaction the United Nations passed Resolution 1542 and the MINUSTAH was created. Wim Sonneveld reports on the UN mission.

- Frisian Flag 2010
The only big international exercise being held in the Netherlands started off very well but suffered from the Ash cloud very quickly. Before the aircraft were grounded and left Leeuwarden earlier than planned, only four days of the exercise were completed, each filled with two missions a day. Our editors visited the base on the second flying day and reported all the ins and outs.

- First Dutch NH90 handed-over
After many delays in the past years, the first NH90-NFH was handed over to 7sq of the Defence Helicopter Command (DHC), based at De Kooij in the northern part of the Netherlands. Although being in the so called 'Minimum mission-ready capability configuration' (as a result of one of the delays) the first helicopter should provide enough training for air and ground crew to familiarise on the NH90. On 17 May, the official hand-over ceremony was witnessed by our editor.

- Certification Exercise (CERTEX)
Scramble was given the opportunity to join the US Navy (USN) and US Marines Corps (USMC) during the last days and conclusion of the work-up period for the 2010 deployment of the 24th MEU as part of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group. The introduction of the MV-22B Osprey into the MEU Air Combat Element seemed a very good reason to take a closer look at this USN/USMC symbiosis.

- Virginia Air National Guard
In 1946, the USAF had just been through a massive de-mobilization effort and was downsizing on a truly massive scale with thousands of aircraft being retired. With so many veterans and combat-seasoned personnel around, a new Air National Guard was organized as a reserve force for the regular USAF. The Virginia Air National Guard was born.

Our monthly returning topics:
- Movements and trips Netherlands, Belgium + Rest of the World, civil and military.

- Aircraft mishaps in Dustpan and Brush.
