Dubai (OMDB/DXB) - 2010 CIV

Post by Niels »

Hello,

On May 3rd, we departed Schiphol for our spotting trip to Tokyo (NRT and HND). Because Emirates was offering a nice deal to Hong Kong, we decided to fly via Dubai and add a roundtrip from Hong Kong to Tokyo with Cathay Pacific. A nice bonus was a flight on a B777-200LR without having to stay in it for 15+ hours. In Dubai we stayed at the Sheraton Deira, which offers nice views of the airport and the runways.

The following was seen on May 4th at arrival and between 07:00 and 18:00:

Dubai Airports paved the way for the successful opening of Dubai World Central (DWC) -Al Maktoum International Airport for cargo operations on June27th, after the new airport passed a series of operational tests conducted during its first ‘live’ flight on June20th. Phase 1 of the airport will feature 1 A380 capable runway, 64 remote stands, 1 cargo terminal with annual capacity for 250,000 tonnes, and a passenger terminal building designed to accommodate 5 million passengers per year. When completed, the airport will be the largest airport in the World with 5 runways, 4 terminal buildings and capacity for 160 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo. The facility opens initially for cargo carriers, with passenger operations currently slated to start up at the end of March 2011 in concert with the IATA schedule change. In the short term the new airport will increase the airport capacity of Dubai to accommodate the 48.0% increase in cargo volumes from 1.9 to 3 million tonnes that is anticipated by 2015. In the long term it will serve as a multi-modal logistics hub for 12 million tonnes of freight and a global gateway for the 150 million passengers per annum that are expected to pass through Dubai by 2030. Dnata Cargo, which is already the ground handler for over 120 airlines at Dubai International Airport (DXB), will provide the ground handling services to all airlines at DWC. (AirTransportNews & IFW & ITJ, June21st 2010).

Re: Dubai (OMDB/DXB) - 2010 CIV

A bit dated already, but who cares.

On the 23rd of October, my wife and I departed Amsterdam on board Garuda's A330, PK-GPJ to head for Bali, Indonesia.

The first stop we had to make was at Dubai for some fresh fuel. Everyone had to get off the aircraft after an eventless first part of the trip for, let say 40 minutes, but it took a bit longer before we were back in the air again...

Most was logged from inside the plane, as the lighting inside the terminal, the elevation and distance to the windows wasn't very sufficient for number-crunching. As I was seated on the left side of the plane, but after landing on 30L and taxiing towards our stand on the back side of the terminal, my wife already had it with me, as I got somewhat frustrated of not seeing a single aircraft during the endless drive to the gate  .

Back on the plane, the aircraft remained a bit too quiet, as nothing was happening. After spending another hour or so on board, the captain told us to deplane again as there was a fuel leak to fix. Spending time at the airport reastaurant was rather frustrating again, as there was a lot of aircraft movement, but nothing to be read off: Iranian and Afghan B727's for instance...
One hour later, we were back at the gate, only to hear that the flight was cancelled and a forty or so passengers were able to proceed to Jakarta with Emirates that night. As we were not among those 40, Garuda arranged hotel rooms at the hotel inside the terminal ( :worship: ).
Our room was equipped with a free massage chair and a great bed. There were no views outside, but I was not complaining with this extra possibility to spot some more at Dubai. As we finally checked in at 1am, it was time for some sleep anyway.

On the 24th, we were able to enjoy breakfast inside one of the airport's restaurants with a great view outside towards the runways. To kill the time, as our flight was delayed until at least 3.30 pm, we decided to do a bustour in this somewhat surreal city. The girl who aranged the bustour guaranteed us entry to the airport upon return, but as we got back the plane was delayed until the original departure time of the next Garuda stopping at Dubai from Amsterdam to Jakarta. Wow, a 24h delay!

As we couldn't get back airside (as our boarding passes said October 23rd, I can't blame them), we went to the Garuda office to ask what's going on, as we wanted to know at what time we would be able to get new boarding passes for our flight. The station manager told us we had to wait until 4.30pm and even said the following remarkable sentence: "You know, in the past we would simply put some tape over the leak and proceed."

Did I mention my wife is somewhat afraid of flying? Well, this remark didn't really help  .

We killed the time in the airport restaurant overlooking some of the activities opposite the terminal.
