Why: According to published reports, the pilot delayed his descent, landed too far down the runway. He applied emergency brakes and lost control of the plane, which crashed past the end of the runway.
Government workers including Minister Mike Mulongoti, Community Development Minister, Michael Kaingu and Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane were aboard but unharmed

Zambia: Rupiah’s advance party plane crash lands
A Zambia Air Force plane, carrying President Rupiah Banda’s advance party today crash landed at Mukinge airstrip in Kasempa - October 16, 2010
A Zambia Air Force plane, carrying President Rupiah Banda’s advance party today crash-landed at Mukinge airstrip in Kasempa, North West of capital Lusaka, as the pilot reportedly lost control of the aircraft.
According to eye witnesses, Works and Supply minister Mike Mulongoti, Community Development Minister, Michael Kaingu and Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane among other government officials escaped unhurt from the crash that left the ZAF plane extensively damaged.
Sources say the pilot of the plane, registration tail number AF 215, delayed to start his descent and touched down at midpoint of the airstrip and realized late that he was running short of the runway.
“That made him start panicking because when he saw that the runway finished, he decided to apply emergency brakes, but the plane still had too much thrust so he lost control and swept through the nearby bushes,” the source said.
The source explained that there was relief after the cabinet ministers emerged from the ‘crashed’ airplane.
After a short while President Rupiah Banda also landed in the presidential chopper at the same airstrip before he was briefed of the earlier accident.
President Banda is today expected to attend the 2010 Nsakwa Yaba Kaonde Traditional Ceremony in North-Western Province.
He will then, Sunday proceed to flag-off the long-awaited construction of the Mongu- Kalabo road in Mongu, Western Province.
