The Air Force has announced that the Air National Guard in Fresno will receive modern F-15 fighter jets from Montana to replace its current F-16 jets, a move one elected official said ensures the base's continued operation.
Devin Nunes (R-Tulare) issued a media release making the announcement of the plan to replace the F-16s, which are being retired by the Air Force.
"Everyone has understood that to keep the base open, the existing F-16’s have to be replaced with modern F-15’s. However, we have struggled to determine where the new aircraft would come from. Today, I can announce with confidence that we have an answer," Nunes said in a statement.
The jets will come from a Montana Air National Guard base in Great Falls, which will now be home to four C-27 J transport aircraft.Moving the F-15s out of Great Falls to Fresno is part of a larger reduction announced earlier this year, Air Force spokesman Gary Strasburg said Thursday.
"The plan is to move those aircraft to Fresno once an environmental impact statement is completed on the new location," he said. The Fresno Air National Guard base is located near Fresno Yosemite International Airport.
Nunes said the Air Force has confirmed that the move would take place no later than the first quarter of 2012.
