There is some sort of black coating on the exhaust. Does anyone know the purpose of this stuff?

Waht you see is the exhaust pipe of the engine. The black things are turkey feathers and they are to stream line the exterior of the engine.

Well I think everybody here knows that. The question was, why are they black - or appear black?
Answers will be questioned.....

The engine used by the maroccan air force is the pratt and whitney f-100-pw-229.
The turkey feathers on that engine are made of carbon fibre instead of steel components.
