Hi all,
The December 2010 issue of Scramble has been released this week!
In this month's edition we have special features about:
- Silence over Thunder City
For many years it was not uncommon to see private owned Lightnings, Hunters or even Bucanneers flying around Cape Town, South Africa. Thunder City, founded and owned by Mike Beachy Head, performed private flights for those able to pay the costs for a ride in a jetfighter/bomber an also performed during air shows. But the slow world economy and some major issues with the local Civil Aviation Authority forced the company to cease operations in September 2010. Gert-Jan Mentink reports about the history of the company and the aircraft in its inventory.
- Falcons on the Go
The Royal Netherlands Air Force has said goodbye to yet another batch of redundant F-16s in early November. Again the Chilean Air Force is the new owner and the first six out of the batch of eighteen aircraft left Leeuwarden for Antofagasta on a very grey Thursday morning.
- Mexican Bicentennial, Santa Lucia
The Mexican Air Force is known to celebrate the country's annual Independence Day with a large air parade over Mexico City for many years now. In recent years also the Mexican Navy found its way to this parade and contributed more aircraft every following year. 2010 was a special year for Mexico since it celebrated its 100th Independence Day and the 100th anniversary of the air force. As predicted, this year's parade was bigger than ever. Wim Sonneveld and Fred Hovestad visited the main operating base, Santa Lucia to see the participants depart.
- Air Caddets Summer Camp
Not reported by us before is one of the many summer camps held in the United Kingdom every year. 661VGS and 662VGS, based at RM Condor/Arbroath, Scotland welcomed one of our reporters, Piet Luijken to witness a typical day of operation of flying with cadets.
- AZOR 2010
One of the biggest helicopter excercises since the end of the Cold War was held in Spain earlier this year. Endre Kárpáti was able to see the many national and international helicopters participate at various locations.
- Project Cutlass
Recently, Jan van Waarde obtained some fascinating photographs of carrier operations conducted by four Chance Vought F7U-3 Cutlass fighters. This quite unique looking aircraft became the subject of yet another interesting article on military aviation in the early 50's.
