BRUSSELS - Hungary will upgrade at least two and possibly three Mi-17 helicopters with the aim of deploying them for two years to Afghanistan.

The project is estimated to cost about $120 million from the initial overhaul through a two-year deployment and the postdeployment process, which will include refurbishment.

The helicopters would be deployed in 2012 or 2013.

Hungary expects to finance 60 percent to 80 percent of the project, depending on funding from other sources.

In an e-mailed statement, the Hungarian Ministry of Defense said the project would enable Hungary to "get a modernized Mi-17 helicopter fleet, which can be used both for national tasks and NATO and EU missions." Hungary's defense force has seven Mi-17 helicopters.
