Eurofighter offers ‘navalised’ Typhoon to India

Eurofighter is offering a naval variant of Typhoon to India.

Gary Parsons - 11-Feb-2011

February 11: Eurofighter is pitching its Typhoon hard for the Indian Air Force’s medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) contract and is also offering a naval variant of the aircraft to bolster its chances.

With the Indian Navy building up its aircraft carrier capabilities, BAE Systems is highlighting the idea of ‘Sea Typhoon’ at the Aero India exhibition currently being held.

Paul Hopkins, BAE Systems' Vice-President in India said "If Typhoon wins MMRCA then India will have the indigenous skills to develop a navalised version.

This is a perfect opportunity for the nation to add aircraft with both land and sea capabilities."

Eurofighter says the naval version will be powerful enough to take-off using a ‘ski-jump’,

as do the Russian aircraft operated by the Indian Navy,

and will use thrust-vectoring to reduce the aircraft’s landing speed and minimise the strengthening needed to cope with arrester wires.
