HAF Mirage 2000B crash

Post by papagio »

HAF Mirage 2000BGM no 204 from 332 Sqn crashed into the sea south of Samos Island due to an engine malfunction. The two crew members ejected successfully and were recovered by Coast Guard vessels without sustaining injuries.

This comes after two incidents involving F-16Blk 52s. One aircraft three weeks ago lost its nose wheel on take off and landed on the nose gear strut and one yesterday suffered an engine explosion on take off but managed to eject its external tanks in the sea and return to land safely.

A tough period for Hellenic Air Force.

Some words of caution on the serial! In this topic, "204" is mentioned as the aircraft that crashed on June 9, 2011. In the other topic posted by Stratofreighter "204" is mentioned as having crashed in January, 2004. Finally, the Scramble database mentions a "last noted" date for "204" in March, 2009. Bearing in mind recent discussions about what A-10 actually crashed I would not place my bets on "204" as this week's victim (yet) Still, good to note that the crew ejected safely.

Edit: the Greek text at defencenet.gr mentioned by Stratofreighter appears to have been updated. They now mention "203" as the Mirage 2000B that crashed earlier, and also give a different crashdate: November 27, 2003. This tallies with the records in the Scramble database. The odds of "204" being the current victim have just increased...

He fell two-seater Mirage 2000BGM - shot performing a dummy AM-39 Exocet

09-06-2011 13:46:42

Seater Mirage 2000BGM fell between Samos and Fourni grip engine 13.24. He was the No. 2 in a formation.

The crew managed to abandon perisynellegi peripleonta vessels from the Coast and Army amphibious exercise and performing it well.

The aircraft performed exercise low shipping (CPM).

Information defencenet.gr, indicate that performing a dummy shot Turkish attack surface vessels with air-to-surface missile AM-39 Exocet!

The crew, about 1.5 miles southwest of Samos initially perceived loss of thrust and subsequently holding the engine. tried to get left high and successful.

The pilots are rescued Captain Michael Kourtis and first lieutenant Michael Mitsiou the 332 Squadron of 114 AM at Tanagra.
The aircraft was received in 1988 was the 10 modernized at "-5"

After accident and current (with the aircraft serial number 204) to 332 Squadron, has now only two super-precious two-seater Mirage of four of the original order.

These were the 201.202, 203 and 204.

The "203" was lost on 27/11/2003 in the area of Andros «Compressor stall» but the two pilots on board had abandoned them and successfully.

The Compressor stall is the limit situation where the increased angle of attack to a maneuver, the compressor is not supplied with proper amount of air as a result and this in turn can not be fed into the combustion chamber with compressed air to achieve combustion.

This causes a sharp temperature rise in the "hot section» (hot section) of the engine and causing the fire and subsequent shutdown of the engine.

Despite the electronically controlled engine FADEC system in extreme situations even this FADEC can not stop or prevent a Compressor stall.

It is the third accident for the Air Force in three edvomades after loss of nose wheel of the F-16 ADV.

Araxos and the explosion in the engine of the F-16 yesterday in Crete. This time we lost the aircraft, but more importantly we had no loss of life.

The Armed Forces and especially the Air Force suffer from lack of spare parts and engineering after the exodus and made a huge effort by all the staff to keep its operational capacity at a high level. So far they are doing ...

Let's look at the announcement of the Air Force:

"On Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 13:24, during low educational mission maritime aircraft Quartet 114PM/332M the Mirage 2000 and while it was between the island of Samos and Fourni,
the No. 2 aircraft formation commanded by Captain (I) Michael Kourtis and the co-pilot Lieutenant (I) Michael Mitsiou performed abandoned after loss of engine thrust.

Both Flying perisynellegisan by boat sail near the Army and is in good health.

Formed committee that will conduct the investigation on the exact cause of the accident. "

Considering that this was basically a crash due to engine trouble following crew ejection, the plane seems indeed in excellent condition.
After two weeks under the sea though, there might be some serious corrosion issues
