Spain commits to AB 212 upgrade

The Spanish Navy's head of logistics finally signed off on a life-extension upgrade
programme for the service's fleet of seven AB 212 helicopters at the end of
December, having agreed the programme in principle back in July 2011.

The upgrade work has been allocated to a temporary joint venture formed by SENER Ingenieria y
Sistemas and INAER Maintenance and is intended to keep the aircraft in service for
another 15 years, by which time they will have been operational for around half a
century.

Sener-Inaer UTE awarded the Spanish Navy’s AB-212 helicopter life-extension programme

27/12/2011

Once the public competitive bidding proceedings for the Spanish Navy’s Agusta Bell 212 Helicopter Life Extension Programme were concluded, the Logistics Support Division (“Jefatura de Apoyo Logístico” or JAL) awarded the programme to the joint venture (UTE) comprising the SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas company and the INAER Maintenance company.

The modernization programme for the seven AB-212 helicopters, which began operations in 1974, will extend their operating lives by at least 15 years by integrating new avionics and communication equipment, upgrading the flight and air navigation systems to current standards, and incorporating new maritime surveillance abilities.

The programme represents an important qualitative leap forward in the air abilities of the Navy and coincides with the commissioning of new Maritime Action Vessels (“Buques de Acción Marítima” or BAMs).

This is a multi-year programme worth 21 million euros and will be carried out at SENER’s facilities in Tres Cantos and San Agustín de Guadalix, and at INAER’s facilities in Albacete and Alicante.
