The only problem is that 3001 is not part of Turkish stars, AFAIK (and the Scramble DB knows), but a "normal" NF-5A 2000 of 133 Filo. So maybe a few parts of 3001 were switched with the ones from this aircraft. So definitely no prove it was 3001.

Apparently... (I have sent an update!)

Still; apart from the black thingy showing '3001' we do not have any proof yet?

First of all, my condolences to the friends and relatives of the pilot from 134 Filo!

If I'm not mistaken, the "black thingy" is the upper part of the ejection seat, housing the seat drogue chute and the pilot's parachute. It is/was not uncommon for Turkish Stars F-5's to have their serial painted on there (even when they still had the older seats). As a matter of fact, when the Turkish Stars ventured out of Turkey for the first times (I remember them at Oostende airshow way back), that was the only way to identify their aircraft as by that time, they did not have the "last two" painted on the tiptanks. So, not 100% sure yet, but unfortunately "3001" is a very strong candidate. And yes, that was a recent (2011) addition to the fleet of Turkish Stars. It also was the first NF-5A of the Dutch Air Force and used to be the dedicated flight test aircraft of the Testgroep Vliegtuigbeproevingen in the 1970's and '80s, being delivered to the THK in 1989.

Edit: when you look at Nik Deblauwes pic at airlinersnet (see above) you can see that 3001 had the new seat, as opposed to the old seats (the same as in their Dutch period) that were (still) installed in most of the other TS jets.

Edit 2: I checked my Izmir pics again and also Turkish Stars 3049 and 3058 (amongst others) had the new seat, while some still had the old one. 3058 was in the static line up of newly converted aircraft (as opposed to the rest of TS on the flightlines). Point is, the parachute housing on 3058's seat is clearly marked "058" in the same place as "3001" on the picture of today's crash; 3049's seat is marked "3049". I rest my case.

Hi all,

I took a photo of the 3001 at Zeltweg last year. It was a spare both days. On my photo I can clearly see 3001 on the top of the seat. Unfortunately I don't know how to put a photo in the scramble site. If someone is interested I can always sent a personal mail.
Regards Brian.

Hmmm.... dunno, but I think this report might be off the mark.. as happens more often when newspapers report on something they have no direct knowledge of. Admittedly, I wasn't there either, but the report from the THK yesterday was clear in that they only mentioned the deceased pilot and did not report anyone missing. The newspaper also mentions the crash as being "2000 kilometres from its take-off point", instead of 2 kilometres/2000 metres it was in reality....

Both the websites of the THK and of the Turkish Stars today have a press release (in Turkish only) regarding the death of Captain Umit Ozer yesterday. Even in the terrible translation of Google translate, it is clear that neither mention a second pilot. Capt. Ozer had joined the Turkish Stars upon transfer from 133 Filo in 2011. May he rest in peace.
