End Of An Era As Final Students Complete Weapons Systems Course

The Royal Air Force is saying a fond farewell to an entire aircrew trade with the last ever students about to pass out of the Weapons Systems course from RAF Leeming.

Flight Lieutenants Sam Baker, Helena Phillips and Jamie Lamb will be the last Weapons Systems Officers (WSOs) ever to complete training in the Hawk as the WSO course winds down..

The trade will no longer be needed in the future as the Tornado GR4 is due to be phased out by 2020, and replacement aircraft will be single seaters.

The WSO course has been run as part of 100 Sqn at RAF Leeming since 1999.
Its end in no way detracts from the achievements of its final students, who are reaching the end of around four years’ worth of hard work and training.

During their time on 100 Sqn, the students have been put intensively through their paces in a wide range of skills both on the ground and in the air.
All aspects of flying sorties are covered, including route and target planning.

Flying in the Hawk jet, the students have also been introduced to fast-jet operations, medium- and low-level flying, air combat and pairs formation flying.
