Wildenrath smokers from the 19th and 92nd Squadron

Post by awacs »

Hello there,

Scanned some old spooks back in the Wildenrath days from 19 & 92 Squadron.
Maybe more people got some old slides or negs from this super base in Germany.
Don't hesitate to fill me in with you're pictures you shot or bought which considers the Wildenrath era.

Here is a start

Jaaa, Wildenrath....nice! I can REALLY recommend visiting the airbase remains today! It's great to reminisce while walking around old aprons, hangars and runwaysections that were once witness to a great variety of cold war aircraft... :!: 8)

Is Wildenrath accessible??
I heard there was a railway testtrack from Siemens. I assumed you cannot walk around there.

Cant wait to walk around there. So many times standing along the fence there , but never been onbase.

I remember seeing 12 35 FTW F-4G here on the day they departed for home on the last day in September 1981 from Wildenrath. Also 24 49 TFW F-4Es from Ramstein 2 days prior to this. Those were definatly the days to be in Germany!.

The westside of the base is accessable on foot (take the blue-highlighted road in top of the picture, and park your car at the end of that road, it's quite near the big hangar).

Part of runway 09 is still there, with some derelict taxiways, approachlights, a big hangar, several aprons and disperals etc. I managed to sneak in with my car 2004 via a dirtroad south of the old southwesterly shelter area, but I don't know if this still is an option. (if you want to try this, take the dirt road that I highlighted in blue in the lower part of the picture).

Good luck! Let me know if you enjoyed your visit! 8)

On the oher side there is still one shelter. When the nearby gate is open (for golfers) it's possible to touch it.

Just a suggestion to adjust the the topic of this thread.
Those days, RAF Phantoms were easily distinguished from USAF and Luftwaffe F-4s because they did not smoke.

thank you Stephan and pipichantal!
I have family not too far from Wildenrath. I really want to visit this site, take the children, and go for a stroll. Besides, its a lovely area, but the last time i've been there was in 1990.
