Vulcan bomber G-VLCN/XH558 to be grounded

Vulcan bomber to be grounded

The last airworthy Vulcan bomber will fly for the final time next year, the trust which funds the aircraft has confirmed.

It has been decided that "challenging modifications" to both wings would not be sustainable to the old aircraft.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust said it decided not to fund the repairs.

Trust chief executive Dr Robert Pleming told supporters: "At the end of next year, she will need a £200,000 modification to her wings to increase her flying life.
"We know that you would do your utmost to fund this work, but for a number of reasons we have decided not to ask you to take this risk."

The Vulcan is a "warbird", so G-VLCN / XH558 perfectly fits in "that other category".

Well, it all depends on how one practices its hobby.

It has a civillian registration, so imho its a civil aircraft. ;)

Hi...

That is a strange way of thinking.
IMHO, the Vulcan was built as a military bomber and whatever registration is on the plane, it stays a military bomber, thus, a military aircraft.
Letters are just letters, nothing more.
The aircraft stays the same...

Interesting angle to a well known discussion. So in your opinion, a Luftwaffe A340 is still civil, because it was designed to haul civilians across the globe. No matter what number is placed on it, it remains just that, an airliner? Do I understand that right?

Or even better: Dutch Cougars also hold a civil permit, in order to be able to sell them better. Not having that was the reason that the Allouette III was not being sold on the civil market.

I am quite sure that I've seen a lot of ex-RNLAF Alouettes being listed in Airnieuws as being sold to Sweden, and being registered in the Swedish civil register.

The Cougars don't hold a civil permit: they have been certificated according to civil regulations, but are 100% military. The certification process needed to be jointly mil & civil to make selling them on the civil market easier.

Thats what I ment....
Apologies for the apparent mix up with the A III. I thought I remembered this remark from a visit to Deelen, I never was a numbercruncher
