On the mentioned russian link were is a pic of the aircraft, and a map of the performed route of the spyplane.

The start base of the performed spyfligt must be Vladivostok-Artem. A Pacific Fleet main airbase. The airbase is today heavily rebuilt, with rebuilt runway and new large tarmac with new building. From the base have Il-20 spyflights been performed. Several other versions of Tu-214 have been newly pictured.

The purpose with Tu-214R has been discussed. Piotr Butowski mentioned it as a GRU owned plane. One rather new version of Il-20 has equipment as a missile, thus search new missile research and hostile RCS signals such as Patriot and newer BMD. Japan and other nations are littered by sigint ground stations.

The source of information comes from Japan and Chinese web sides, as seen in the mentioned link side.

The actual flight occured 17 December.

Websides had information 18 December such as:
mil.news.sina.com.cn/2012-12-18/1003710011.html

It would be interested how US sigint aircraft responded.

The RC-135S/V/W is based at Okinawa.

Satellites update Misawa and several Japan sigint groundstations.
All linked via Hawaii

The Tu-214SUS is the first of this version. The second (514) is on building, with official delivery 2014.

Total 22 Tu-214 is delivered, and 29 is ordered with secure version.
