Yes the four military airbases PAY,MEI,SIO, EMM have a summer break between 4 and 8 (10) weeks. That is for the people to have a break from the jet noises and of course for maintenance.geert99 wrote:I'm on Holiday near Meiringen this summer (27/7-10/8. However SIS says there is no fighter movement in the period I'm there, which is bad luck. As I can see this for more airbases in Switzerland, does that mean it's like this every year? Do they close the base for the summer or something or maintenance?
Anyway, is there anything else worth seeing in the area regarding military aircraft?
Emmen, just 50 minutes away from Meiringen have the F-18 from Meiringen and Payerne while a month. 1000 flights activities are planned between 5-30 August. The Patrouille Suisse an Pc-7 Team (DUB) is also active in your holiday time. http://www.patrouillesuisse.ch/ Emmen is open from 25 July and will start with slighty reduced jet activities (perhaps 20-25 movements per day) and maybe an Antonov 124. Alpnach and Buochs are probable reduced due to summer holidays but they are only 30 minutes from Meiringen and should have interesting activities (Indian Pc-7, Saudi-Arabia Pc-21).geert99 wrote:Anyway, is there anything else worth seeing in the area regarding military aircraft?

Don't know were you have this information from but the runway is this week still closed at Emmen as it has been for the last 3 weeks. Next week it may also closed. You can check this on there websiteSleegertje wrote:As far as I know, Emmen will be busy with aircraft flying.
Yes you are right the access is from Rüeggisingerstrasse. The hornets are in the blue hangar beside the Patrouille Suisse Hunter.Viper wrote: I'm planning a visit to Emmen around 21-8. Can you see the parked F-18's from out side the base ? If so, from wich location ? Rüeggisingerstrasse ?
Emmen is open from 25 July but only has overflights from Payerne and Meiringen in that week. A week later the airport is open with reduced flights (about 20 movements per day) and the hornets remain on ground until 2 August.W&R wrote:Don't know were you have this information from but the runway is this week still closed at Emmen as it has been for the last 3 weeks. They are already gone from Payerne and operates from Tours, France before they have summer brake. They are normally in Sion from April to August. Meiringen was open but only based with Patrouille Suisse included hornets flights for maintenance and overflights from exercises outside Switzerland. Meiringen is closed from 29 July.Starman wrote: Payerne also have the 7 PC-21s operating while Emmen is shut (the 8th one is at Pilatus). Meringen is closed till at least the end of this week for the summer holiday.
