The video was filmed by one of the passengers on board Allegiant Air flight 592, which was scheduled to fly from Las Vegas to Phoenix but was held for two hours on the tarmac.
As the temperature on board rose above 40 degrees Celsius , some travellers were taken ill as they waited without air conditioning, food or water.
In a bid to lighten the mood, one man used his iPod speakers to play R Kelly's hit "I Believe I Can Fly" for his fellow passengers, who saw the funny side and joined in an ironic rendition of the song, waving their hands above their heads to the R&B ballad.
The Allegiant flight video has been watched more than 165,000 times since it was posted on YouTube on Sunday.
