REQ: B-29 Diamond Y at Schiphol 1940s

Post by Richard from Rotterdam »

Hi all,

Going through old old family photos I came across a picture my late grandad took at Schiphol, some time during the late 1940s. my guess would be 1948, maybe '49. On the platform are a couple of KLM Convair 240s visible (one of them PH-TEM), a KLM DC4, and to my sheer astonishment a B-29!

It carries tail code Diamond Y (the Y inside the diamond) and I am curious as to when this was, which particular aircraft etc. A quick search online tells me this code used to belong to the 501st BG at Guam, but that unit was disestablished with its aircraft mothballed in 1946. So it should be a different unit by that time.

Anyone who can help me with this request? Many thanks in advance.

Couldn't it be a B-50?

Hello

This B-29 stood at Schiphol Amsterdam for the "Wings of Victory" event.

The event was held, from 22 okt – 23 nov. 1945, at De Dam in Amsterdam en inside The Bijenkorf. People could take a look at RAF / USAAF Planes because they win the WWII.

Also at Schiphol Amsterdam stood several planes.
The B-29 flew from the United States andt after this event it would be stationed ad wiesbaden AFB in Germany.

I have several documents about this event.
Maybe you can sent me a PM?
Greetings
