Ground testing is under way of an all-new jet-powered tactical strike aircraft designed to perform “lower-threat battlefield and homeland security missions” pitched at cash-strapped militaries across the globe.

Cessna parent Textron has teamed with AirLand Enterprises, forming a joint venture, Textron AirLand, to develop the Scorpion, with first flight anticipated later this year, it says.

VIDEO: Scorpion light strike aircraft completes pre-flight taxi trial

Textron has released video footage showing taxi testing with its Scorpion demonstrator, just days before the type's expected first flight.

Performed in Wichita, Kansas on 25 November, the event involved the twin turbofan-powered tactical strike concept,
which has been in development since early 2012 by the Textron AirLand venture, also involving AirLand Enterprises.

Textron says the Scorpion's first flight is scheduled to occur on 3 or 4 December, from the US Air Force's McConnell AFB site in Wichita.
