Fort Hood and Hood AHP (KHLR), 2021

Post by tally »

Hello,

had the pleasure to witness the rehearsal of the 100th anniversary of the 1st Cav, September 23, 2021. The following was noted during a day well spent.

1st Cavalry Division Museum (all preserved)
AH-1S 68-17113
CH-54A 66-18409
OH-13E 51-13993
OH-58C 69-16369
OH-6A 65-12920
OV-1C 60-3747
UH-1A 59-01625
UH-1H 73-21839
Besides these gems the museum holds all sort of armored vehicles and tanks. Worth a visit for sure.

3rd Cavalry Division Museum
OH-13E unk
UH-1B 61-00693 as "61963"
The two are the only aviation related gems. They do have massive amounts of tanks and other interesting historical vehicles including loads of Russian made tanks captured during Desert Storm.

Elsewhere (all preserved):
AH-1S 67-15865 Sadowski Parade Field
GA-10A 76-0518/MY NW corner 53rd and Rod&Gun Club Loop
OH-6A 67-16269 NW corner 72nd and Battalion Ave
UH-1H 68-15727 NE corner 16th and Battalion Ave
UH-1V (69-15268) as "O-11556" 1st CAV HQ Cooper Field
The UH-1V at the 1st Cav HQ is a complete guess. It is marked as O-11556 but that does not exist. A little research found that there is a UH-1V (69-15268) with C/N 11556 that has not been seen since Jun 2000. This could be a match but not 100% sure. Anyone have intel on this Huey?

1st CAV Centennial Celebration
AH-64E 1-227 Avn
Flying only: 12-09039, 18-03200, 18-03206
Static: 16-03103

UH-60L A/2-227 Avn
Static: 98-26817 (702473)

UH-60M 3-227 Avn
Flying only: 16-20809, 16-20811
The flying helicopters made three low passes over Cooper Field. They were low low.

Wandered over to Hood AHP and the following was noted:
Hood AAF
HH-60M C/2-227 Avn
16-20857, 16-20858, 16-20859, 16-20863, 16-20866, 16-20867, +8 unk.

Elsewhere (all preserved):
AH-1S (68-15013) E Murphy rd near entrance to Hood AAF (can anyone confirm this Cobra?)
AH-1S 68-15052 E Murphy rd east side of rd
UH-1H 67-17586 E Murphy rd near UH-60 ramp

So much more could be seen at Hood AHP but heathaze and other factors made it impossible to note anything else. If I had to make a wild guess around 10 Chinooks, 40 Blackhawks, and around 20 Apaches were visible.

The forgotten West Ft. Hood has 1x OV-1, 1x RC-12 on sticks. One OH-58A was moved to Base Ops off Gray Dr. after spending time at our BN HQ on Cobra Dr. I left in 2018, but next to New Robert Gray Dr. motor pool sits 1x UH-1 and 1xOH-58 just wasting away behind a fence.

Tally,
Thanks for the report.

Elsewhere (all preserved):
OH-6A 67-16269 NW corner 72nd and Battalion Ave
>> This is in false marks, the real version being shot down over South Vietnam in Aug69. It's also been reported as "68-17243", which is also incorrect. Strangely the sighting dates flip backwards and forwards between the serials. Maybe it wears a different one on each side?

>> Yes, that is correct AFAIK.

I see them on the map indeed. Did not make it out to Robert Gray AAF. Perhaps in the future.

Thanks Andy.
The UH-1V door was cracked but not enough to have a look inside.
