When Marine Corps EL Toro Air Station was closed in 1999, the Flying Leatherneck Museum moved to Miramar. The museum was closed in 2021, with no clear idea of what would happen to the several dozen aircraft and other artifacts.
Last December the museum reached a tentative agreement with the City of Irvine to relocate the museum BACK to El Toro. One of the remaining MCAS hangars has been identified as a suitable place that can house the entire location indoors. Renovations need to be done before hangar can be used.
The Flying Leathernecks Historical Foundation is aiming for a 2023 date to reopen the museum.
