ItAF will start to replace the Tornado ECR from 2022 with F-35A SW Bk3F

The Typhoon ECR is not only aiming for the SEAD/DEAD mission, but EA as well (which would augment the current mission set).
If it ever happens, please spray them in the Have Glass kind of paint like the artwork shows:

Before thinking about a Typhoon ECR it would be better to focus on the AESA radar.
After having contracted Tranche 4, we are coordinating for Tranche 5 and an ECR variant is not taken into consideration.

in the meantime, the F-35A already has some good EA capabilities.
For this reason in Italy the F-35A will replace the Tornado ECR first and then the IDS.

Germany plans to buy up to 35 US-made F-35 fighter jets and 15 Eurofighter jets

The additional Eurofighter jets Germany plans to purchase, made by a consortium that includes Airbus, would reportedly be used for other operations, including electronic warfare and escort missions.

Germany to buy fighter jets from US amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Move is part of Berlin’s policy shift toward strengthening its armed forces again.


BERLIN — Germany will buy F-35 fighter jets manufactured in the U.S. in an effort to get its military back up to speed and ensure ability to honor its NATO commitments, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It was important that the solution be found quickly, which is why we decided, after careful consideration of all the options on the table, to initiate the procurement of F-35 aircrafts for the task of nuclear sharing,” German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said in Berlin on Monday.

The minister, who didn’t specify how many jets Germany would buy, added that the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) it has been developing with France and Spain would also be continued.

“We are securing a strong German role in the future FCAS system, because … it remains our intention to gradually replace the Eurofighter with the next generation fighter FCAS from 2040 onward and to realize the tri-national FCAS program as an example of European cohesion,” she said.

According to earlier reports in German media about the F-35s, there were fears in Berlin that the American jets would be at odds with FCAS and therefore irritate Paris, where French President Emmanuel Macron has for years advocated Europe’s so-called strategic autonomy.

But Lambrecht said she reassured her French counterpart Florence Parly already last week, adding that “it is very important to us that we continue our cooperation in this area.”

Speaking alongside Lambrecht, the inspector general of the German Air Force, Ingo Gerhartz, said that considering Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine, there was no other option but to buy F-35, which he called “the most modern combat aircraft in the world.”

Gerhartz added that the F-35’s availability on the market was an important aspect because Germany is rushing to modernize its armed forces after years of neglect and failing to meet the NATO defense spending target of 2 percent of GDP.

Well I really think it’s all about that one single bomb it has to be able to carry. It really doesn’t matter if it is carried by a Tornado or by an F-35.

Maybe the Tornado can give more of a punch in the final seconds of the attack. But getting to the target is the most difficult part. Of course with all the modern radars and anti-aircraft systems the F-35 will have the best chance of getting to the target.

The Tornado is getting obsolete, with old equipment. You cannot upgrade aircraft indefinitely. The survivability will degrade over time. And an aircraft that will not survive an attack, does not deliver much of a punch. They are getting old. Just compare targeting technology and data integration between a Tornado and a F-35. That is a world of difference.
