Airbus has for the first time provided an A350-900 with the ITA Airways color scheme, according to images taken by a hobby photographer at the Airbus factory in Toulouse. The device will be delivered to ITA in the course of this spring.
The Italians want to fly non-stop between Rome and Buenos Aires with the A350 next summer. This will be by far the longest route in the airline's network, with a flight duration of around fourteen hours.
Predecessor Alitalia also flew between the two cities until the start of the corona crisis. At that time, this was mainly done with Boeing 777s, but those aircraft did not go along with the transition to ITA. In terms of widebody's, ITA now only has a few A330-200's in the fleet.
The A350 that is captured here on the sensitive plate is not entirely new: Airbus built the aircraft (with serial number 270) three years ago for Hong Kong Airlines, but due to the financial problems at that company, the aircraft was never delivered.
According to aviation expert Richard Schuurman, ITA will receive another A350 originally built for Hong Kong Airlines (MSN283). In addition, the Italians expect six A350s that were once intended for Hainan Airlines. All these devices are leased from ALC.
In the somewhat longer term, ITA will also add fifteen Airbus A330-900s to the longhaul fleet.
