Two Rafales collide in flight in Cognac during the Air Meeting

Two Rafales touched in flight during the Air Meeting of Cognac, in Charente, this Sunday, May 22.

No injuries are to be deplored but major damage to homes in the town of Gensac-la-Pallue

"It looked like a gunshot, we went out, there was dust everywhere," begins Sandra.

This resident of Gensac-la-Pallue (16) lives a few meters from the house on which the debris of a fighter plane
more than one meter long fell on Sunday May 22 around 12:30 p.m.

The collision of two Rafales, in full flight demonstration on the occasion of the second day of the Cognac Air Meeting .

"A rare thing", according to Colonel Lyautey, in command of air base 709.

No injuries are to be deplored but the incident caused a great fear
in the small town located a stone's throw from the military base.

Onlookers parade on the Chemin des Gascards, in order to see with their own eyes the extent of the damage.

Tiles still litter the ground, the roof appears to be "bitten" by a giant

. "We were lucky," said the mayor of the town, Bernard Mauzé, himself living in this small street.

He keeps in mind the accident of 1967 which he had attended as a child, at Le Bourget (93).

A pilot of the Patrouille de France had then lost his life in a crash, a hundred meters from the stands,

Ongoing investigations
"I don't know if we can say that there was more fear than harm, because this incident is not trivial," he said.

Residents share their concerns.

Should we continue to perform this kind of event?
For Frédéric, Sandra's husband, “it's another debate…”.
One thing is certain: "It gives a bad image", ends his young son, Jules.

The 2022 edition of the Meeting de l'air will have attracted nearly 30,000 visitors to the Cognac-Châteaubernard air base 709 on May 21 and 22

The village is now awaiting explanations as to the reason for the collision between the two fighter jets.

Contacted, the police teams as well as the firefighters and the gendarmes dispatched to the scene confide
that it is impossible for them to communicate on the question.

“Three investigations have already been launched,
announces Colonel Lyautey, relieved that there are no victims.

In aeronautics, there is only one priority: safety. We have to shed light and understand what happened.

The two aircraft belonged to the Vautour Bravo tactical display team of the 30th Fighter Wing.

The wing had just won the Silver Tiger award for the best display at the NATO Tiger Meet 2022 in Araxos, Greece.
“Rogue Spartan,” the leader, also won the Best Tiger Aircraft award for its livery.

"During their tactical presentation, two Rafales from the 30th Fighter Wing touched each other in-flight,"
said Colonel Nicolas Lyautey, commander of the 709 Cognac-Châteaubernard airbase
where the air show was taking place.

"One of them lost a piece of its tail fin, which damaged the roof of a house during its fall."

A picture shared on social media shows that the top of the Rogue Spartan fin was severed.

This part includes several sensors of the Rafale’s SPECTRA electronic suite,
including the missile launch detection system whose optronic is visible.

It was recovered in the village of Gensac-la-Pallue, 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) east of Cognac.

Other pictures seem to indicate that the
leader’s left wingtip missile pylon and the
wingman’s right canard were damaged,

though the French Air and Space Force have not yet confirmed this.
