Riga Museum

Post by 42brianscott@gmail.com »

Can anyone help with the current status of this collection, please?
I know it is meant to be moving to the other side of the airport but recent google shot shows the collection all still grouped outside the terminal.
Has anyone been recently - can these aircraft still be easily seen?
Any help appreciated, I am planning a trip to the Baltic States.
Thanks.

Been to Riga last April, the collection has moved to the other side of the runway, old space is now a construction site.

We could make out some of the aircraft from the runway but did not go there as we had already visited the museum about ten years ago and not much new has been added since. Sorry no information about how to reach the new site.

Hi,
we are also going this year and were checking. An e-mail to the owner Victor Talpa and he replied confirming he has moved to the other side and is also now open to visitors. If you check Google Earth on the west side on "Skultes iela" just east of the village of Skulte (and the Il-28 there) it now states that is where the museum now resides. There are some photos out there from a visit on 5th March this year so looks like he has plenty more room now.

That's good news and thanks to Antilliaan and Vulture One for the information.
It is an interesting and varied collection, so I am glad it is now open for business agin.
The photos from 5th March do indeed suggest photography will be a little easier with more space between aircraft.

Morning,
We are just back from Latvia as we included what has to have been the most poorly organised airshow (The Baltic International Airshow 2022 at Liepaja) I have been to since I started military spotting in 1965 - so some time ago. However got to the museum so updating;
1. The Il-28 38 blue has been taken down from the plinth at the village of Skulte and is now within the museum. Nothing else new noted.
2. There was no An-14.
3. All else were as expected and well recorded.
4. The museum is now around 500m from the western Riga Intl Airport (RIX) fence. From the observation mound at the fence you can clearly see the exhibits. Entry is now €10 (for Brits anyway as he asked nationality before charging :D ) so not a lot for a great and more organised museum. He needs the support as the move was a big one so don't just log from the outside.

Hope that helps others.

Hi again,

As a postscript, worth noting that the Zoo painted aircraft at Tukums are now no longer on the ramp but back where they were at the SW HAS site. This is probably very recent but only four frames visible from gate at western end - five if you identify Mig-21 fin tips. Only Il-62, Il-18 and 2 x Yak-40s at terminal and eastern end. An-2 was on central ramp near Baltic Bees hangar.
