Contract Lear slides off NASNI runway 9 Sept 22

One of Fast Air's Lear jets, N26FN*, went off the end of runway 29 (EDIT runway 36) and ended up on the beach shingle just short of San Diego Bay. Local news say no major injuries.

this from 2 years ago, and MUCH better weather. We are getting hit by the edge of Tropical Storm Kay, and it's been raining here most of the day.


*very educated guess on my part. Flightaware says the flight that landed at 1:17pm (when the overrun took place) was FST26. I popped N26FN into Flightware and it shows it as the same flight. The photo from the news site is too blurry to read the tail number. If they don't pull the jet off the beach tonight I might try and get a photo tomorrow, assuming wx cooperates.

The Navy hasn't recovered the jet as of this morning, not sure if the accident investigators need more time, or what.

Yesterday they put out an anti-spill boom to contain fluids and also attached a line between the plane and the runway tie downs to prevent the jet from going anywhere when the tide came in. Right at sunset last night the jet was actually floating, and when I went out to see it this morning it was floating once again.

It hasn't been announced how they are going to recover the jet. I didn't see any equipment staged this morning. The Navy has a sea going barge with a crane onboard that they've used to recover jets at sea in the past, not sure if there is enough water for the barge to come in. I guess they could also call in a Sea Stallion from Miramar to lift it out.

Woke up at 6:44am. Checked the live webcam. !!!! They've already loaded it onto a truck. Drove over the bridge to Shelter Island. The storm is gone, so more light, but backlit. They used a local crane service to lift the plane off.

The live webcam retains a couple hours of coverage, so I was able to go back and watch a replay of the lift. Both pods and both main gear mounts were on the plane and looked OK to me. After the plane was taken off the beach some workers pulled the pieces of the nose gear out. The truck drove all around the air station and went to one of the hangars over by VRC-30's hangar. Right outside the hangar was another Lear 36 on the ramp. I have no idea if Fast Air can repair the plane or not.
