Spain will withdraw its last P.3 Orion from Djibouti in December 2022 and will decommission it
The forecast is to replace it with another aircraft and continue with the maritime patrol missions in the Atalanta operation

The Air and Space Army plans to retire its last P.3 Orion maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft in service next December 2022.

This aircraft is currently part of the Orion detachment ,
deployed in Djibouti within the framework of the European Union 's Atalanta operation that fights against piracy in the Indian Ocean.

The aircraft plans to end its participation in this operation and return to "national territory at the beginning of December 2022",

from the Defense General Staff (Emad) .
Upon arrival at its base in Morón (Seville), the aircraft will be decommissioned that same month,
according to the Air Force's plans.

The P.3 Orion will be replaced, in principle, by "another aircraft to continue fulfilling the mission", therefore,
the plan is to maintain the detachment.

With its withdrawal, the Air and Space Army will lose its anti-submarine warfare capacity :!:
and its maritime patrol capacity will be drastically reduced.

Its replacement will presumably be one of the CN-235s adapted to maritime surveillance missions ( Vigma )
through a modernization program carried out during the first decade of this century.

This model already knows what it is to participate in the EU maritime surveillance operation in the Horn of Africa, although it has not done so since 2015.

This mission also includes a European naval force in which the Navy participates.

Since 2008, Spain has maintained a permanent maritime patrol aircraft based in Djibouti.

Currently, what is known as the Orion detachment is made up of a P.3M from Group 22 and around fifty soldiers.

Since its inception, the P3 Orion aircraft from Wing 11 in Morón and the C-235 (D4) from Wings 46 (Canary Islands),
48 (Madrid) and 49 (Palma de Mallorca) have been on this mission.

Gap in maritime patrol and C295

The loss of the P.3 Orion will cause a temporary loss of capabilities in maritime patrol and, above all, in anti-submarine warfare :!: in the Air Force.

The Ministry of Defense is working on the purchase of four C-295 in the MPA/ASW version to recover these capabilities, however, the program is still pending funding.

The General Directorate of Armament and Material ( DGAM ) and Airbus are currently working on the final configuration of the aircraft to "achieve an improvement of the current capabilities of the C-295 MPA/ASW " .

Although the C295 MPA has less autonomy and range than the P.3 ,
the forecast is that it will have everything necessary to cover priority anti-submarine, anti-surface and ISR warfare capabilities, and support search and rescue capabilities.
