Two people were rescued from the wreck of a single-engine aircraft that crashed into the sea off the northern coast of Crete earlier on Thursday.
One of the passengers, aged 26, is a South African national and is well in his health, while the second, an Indonesian man ged 68, was unconscious, Cost Guard sources said.
Both men were transferred to the port of Iraklio where the older passenger received CPR.
Cretapost.gr reported at 11:30 a.m. that despite the rescue efforts, the 68-year-old passenger from Indonesia did not recovered and was proclaimed dead. The second passenger, a 26-year-old man from South Africa, is i good health, receiving first aid at the Heraklio hospital.
Two Smart Aviation ne Turbo Porter (two last two built and the production has ended now) were on a delivery flight to Indonesia and the other one returned and landed safely at Heraklion International Airport (HER/LGIR).
The plane was on a long journey. On Monday, Indonesian Smart Aviation took delivery of the last Pilatus PC-6 ever built in Stans, Switzerland . This ended the production of the single-engine propeller aircraft with Stol characteristics after 63 years.
On the same day, two pilots took off for Indonesia with the aircraft with the serial number 1019 and the registration PK-SNF. The transfer flight led from Buochs airfield first to Maribor, then to Podgorica and from there to Heraklion. On Thursday morning (December 15) shortly after 9 a.m. local time, they continue towards Egypt.
Pilots have issued an emergency call
However, immediately after takeoff from Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis, there were apparently problems with the Pilatus PC-6. The Cretapost newspaper writes that the pilots made an emergency call . The recording by the Flightradar 24 flight tracking service shows that they then turned around.
But apparently it wasn't enough to go back to the airport. Because the brand-new machine lost height and fell from around 430 meters into the sea. The accident site is about seven kilometers east of the capital of Crete.
Pilatus confirms crash
Aboard Smart Aviation's PC-6 were a 62-year-old pilot from Indonesia and a 32-year-old pilot from South Africa. Both were recovered from the sea and taken to Venizelos Hospital Heraklion. According to the Cretapost, the elderly man was recovered unconscious by the Greek Coast Guard. However, attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful and he has since been pronounced dead.
Manufacturer Pilatus Aircraft confirms the accident. However, no further information can be given at this time, according to a spokesman. "We support the authorities so that this incident can be clarified."
