KLM temporarily loses cargo jumbo due to hard landing in Miami

MIAMI AIRPORT

KLM-Martinair Cargo's oldest cargo jumbo, the PH-MPS,
has been out of work at Miami's American airport for some time after a hard landing with serious damage to the wings.

The 33-year-old cargo plane apparently crashed into the runway at Miami Airport just before Christmas 2022
with such a force that the flaps on the wings of the 33-year-old B747-400BCF were severely damaged ,
"possibly beyond repair," says an anonymous source.

According to a KLM spokesman, however, the cargo plane can certainly not be written off as a total loss,
but "the relationship to the damage has not yet been established".

He points out that investigations are currently being carried out
“and repairs are expected to last until January 20.
So we are short of a machine.
Very annoying for our customers.”

Flights cancelled

According to the Flightradar website, the KLM/Martini Cargo cargo plane has been at Miami Airport since December 22 of last year
and further flights with the B747-400BCF,
including the return flight to Schiphol and a flight to Johannesburg, were canceled on December 28.

The temporary shutdown of the cargo jumbo
comes at a particularly unfortunate time for the Dutch air freight carrier
as a second cargo jumbo, the PH-CKB, has been in Indonesia for major maintenance since the end of last year.

For that loss, KLM-Martinair Cargo temporarily hired a B747-400F from competitor Cargolux.

The Dutch aviation group normally has four B747-400Fs,
of which the PH-MPS is the only one in the colors of Martinair Cargo.

The other three operate in the colors of KLM Cargo.
The cargo planes are mainly used for the transport of flowers.
