Large explosions have occurred in an ammunition depot of the Greek Air Force in an area where forest fires are raging. The fires could reach the depot, with all its consequences. There are no fatalities.
The ammunition depot is located at one of the largest air bases of the Greek army, in the coastal municipality of Nea Anchialos, in Central Greece.
Just like the islands of Rhodes and Corfu, the region has been ravaged by fierce forest fires since Wednesday. When the flames reached the ammunition depot, explosions occurred that could be heard from up to twenty kilometers away. Fortunately, the air base was evacuated well in advance, so there are no reports of fatalities. The depot itself was of course destroyed and the shock waves of the explosions were so strong that windows were shattered for miles around. There have been injuries due to broken glass, Greek media report. There have been no reports of injuries from the base itself so far.
Most of the air base's personnel have since been evacuated. Residents of twelve nearby villages have also left the area because of the fires. Air Force fighter jets, including F-16s, have flown to other bases.
