Hangar 10 puts Bf 109 and Co. in the shop window

Until 2020, Hangar 10 on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom was the Mecca of the German warbird scene.
But then the owner, Volker Schülke, fell and died.
Now the entire aviation inventory is for sale -
from the school glider to the superbly restored Bf 109.

01/30/2023

It is an illustrious ensemble for which the Swiss company Boschung Global is looking for new owners on its website.

The company, based in Sarnen in central Switzerland, specializes in the global trade in historic aircraft
- and itself refers to its "unique network" that has grown over the years,
which brings together owners of aviation classics who are willing to sell with "a large number of solvent prospective buyers".

Recently, the portfolio of such classics, which are in the virtual shop window at Boschung Global,
has been enriched by a whole lot of rarities:
The entire inventory of Air Fighter Academy GmbH from Heringsdorf (Usedom) has found its way here.

Unclear future for Hangar 10

With the Air Fighter Academy, at home in the famous Hangar 10 at the Heringsdorf airfield,
founder and boss Volker Schülke had fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Here he collected warbirds and classics from home and abroad,
with a particular focus on German rarities such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 or Focke-Wulf Fw 190.

As the driving force behind the scene, he initiated restoration projects,
coordinated them to completion and always understood bring the right people together for each project.

But in August 2020 , Schülke had a fatal accident at the controls of a Pilatus P-2 .

It has not yet been conclusively clarified how Hangar 10 on Usedom will continue in the long term.

Rarities in the shop window

The fact that the bulk of the aircraft owned by Air Fighter Academy are now up for sale
is at least a hint that the unique collection could soon be scattered in all directions.

In detail, Boschung Global lists
two historical SG 38 school gliders as airworthy models,
plus a Soviet Polikarpov Po-2,
a Fieseler Storch,
a Bücker Jungmann and
a Jungmeister,
a Messerschmitt Bf 108,
a Bf 109 G-6,
a Bf- 109 G-14

and an Fw 190 A-8.
The latter was the first Fw 190 constructed by Flug Werk GmbH,
whose first owner was the Frenchman Christophe Jaquard.
It took off on its maiden flight in 2009, but had to ditch in the Mediterranean in 2010.
Under the aegis of Hangar 10, the specialists from MeierMotors in Bremgarten breathedbring the plane back to life .
It has been flying again since 2019, powered by a Russian Asch 82 radial engine -
but with the original nameplate of an Fw 190 built in 1944 as the historical core.
The two 109s are based on parts from machines manufactured in 1943 (G-6) and 1944 (G-14) and destroyed in World War II.

The ready-to-fly classics are joined by ongoing projects:
a Fokker Dr.1 under construction,
a semi-finished Bf 109 E-3 from 1939 and
a (particularly rare) Bücker 180 Student
currently undergoing restoration in the Czech Republic.

Not fully approved

Boschung Global does not quote prices on its website for any of the aircraft.
Interested parties will only receive the offer price on request.
It should be mentioned that all airworthy Warbirds of the Air Fighter Academy
are equipped with a provisional air traffic license (VVZ).

For a regular approval,
future owners would have to spend an amount of money and time that is difficult to quantify, combined, among other things,
with an extensive test flight phase.

Against this background, it remains to be seen whether the aircraft will find buyers in the near future
– and what will happen to them in the future.

Hangar 10 fleet and facilities at Heringsdorf find new custodian

The Hangar 10 collection at Heringsdorf airfield on the north German island of Usedom in the Baltic Sea has been sold via Swiss-based vintage aircraft and warbird broker Boschung Global to Karl F. Grimminger, already one of mainland Europe’s leading historic aeroplane operators. He will keep it open at its existing Heringsdorf location, complementing his Luftraum Süd facility at Aalen-Elchingen.

Hangar 10 will remain at the current location, on the island of Usedom, Pomerania, although Grimminger is considering changing the name to Air Traum Nord. In his view, positive benefits can be expected between the collection in Usedom and his existing museum in Aalen, both of which are now open to the public. Grimminger’s current collection has been noted to attend away events as well as flying ‘at home’.

HANGAR 10 KOMPLETT VERKAUFT
