Spotting Possibilities Russia?

Next year I will be going on a University trip to russia mainly St Petersburg and moscow. I was just wondering if there are any good spots or if there were any problems with secuirty etc.

I have bin with an spotting trip to Moscow and i can say that it is not easy to make pictures. At Sheremetyevo there is an restaurant which give you an overview at the airport. There is an change that you will be send away here if you are going to make pictures. During our stay over there people were send away !!!
It is not reccommend to go to the runway. 2 people who were with our group did that but were send away.
In the Domodedovo airport terminal there are some large windows which give you an overview of a part of the apron and storage area. Our Russian contact says that we can not make pictures there because of the high security. Of course we did but it is not reccommend.

Spotting can be very Russia good!! But it depends on what you are after. Civil or military, photo's/serials/both...

What about all those fantastic pictures on airliners.net? It looks like not everyone is send away. Among the photographers are also spotters from western Europe. A week of planespotting around Moscow would be an unforgettable experience for me. While Air Berlin offers return tickets DUS - DME for as low as 98 euro, the visum hassle and the uncertainty about spotting possibilities have prevented me from going there. Has HAT ever tried to organise a trip to Moscow?

HAT has never bin to Moscow.
The best field to look is indeed DME. In the terminal you have large windows were you see the platform. If you are carefull enough you can take pictures there but watch out for security !! When you walk out of the terminal you have at your right hand site an huge parking place. If you walk to the end of it you are an couple of meters from the runway and you have an perfect photo oppurtunity. Also here is security but when we were there they only said that we could not make pictures of EL AL airplanes.

Please, feel free to share some more information. When did you go there, where did you stay, were you alone or with other spotters, how many Tu-154's did you make? As my girlfriend is quite reluctant of letting me go to Russia on a plane spotting trip, any positive feedback is highly appreciated.

Last month I was with a group and at times individually at the Moscow airports.

Without authorization airplane photography is nowhere permitted, so everybody (police, car-park-guards and even locals) asked us to stop taking pictures.

So don't stay at one place all the time and you can take nice pictures like this An-12 at Domo or go somewhere in the woods around the fields.



Taking notes from any public area was never a problem, not even when using those big (russian) binoculars.
Actually, at Domodedove a poster gallery with many pictures was set up explaining the hobby!



Taking pictures is perfectly allowed when you are with a group and have paid an ever increasing number of $$$.

Hi everyone,

there is a message at Airliners.net in the photography forum from a Russian photographer that photography might be allowed at Domodedovo in the future.

I took some photos from the terminal, but the light is only good during the evening (you're facing south), and we were approached by security officers within 10 minutes. Unless you have a permit, you're going to be in trouble.

The parking is really good, especially if you can stay out of sight of the security

Some people from our group have been into the woods and found a good spot. I don't know where it is, but it is possible to stand in the landing without being checked.

At Sheremetyevo you have very nice view from the 5th floor restaurant. You're facing north and everything passes by. Normally photography isn't allowed, I think it's only tolerated during the week of the MAKS Airshow.
For a good photo of a Tu-134 on the furthest runway, you need 600mm(analog). With 2 full days at SVO, you can see almost the whole fleet of Aeroflot and its partners (-Don and -Nord)

I think the key is to find a clearing in the woods around the airfield to take photos, and you can likely stay in the terminal if you are only interested in numbers.

Well, anyone ever visted Nizhniy Novgorod?
Situation the same as in Moscow?
I did see a nice helicopter in the most recent Scramble taken at this airfield.
I will be there shortly (without too much time left --> business) but you will never know.

However, if you dare, you can possibly try the 4th floor in the employee restaurant. I wouldn't suggest staying there for too long, with all the security personnel enjoying their dinner overthere
