Best home antenna for CIV and MIL air ? Experiences ?

Hello all !

Just remembered there was a topic covering the request, but a recent look did not allowed me to find it, topic most probably deleted.

In theory, what would be more efficient anttena type ? a discone (like scanmaster airmaster), or log-periodic, or "linear" like Diamond D777 ?

So what would be the best antenna covering civil aviation (118-136 MHz) ?

And what would be the best military aviation antenna (230-400 MHz) ?

The aim is to listen to far communications, from home.

Use of pre amplifier would be helpful ? Any experiences with products like JIM-75 ?

Shops URLs doing delivery inside Benelux would be great also.

So, any clues would be very welcomed !

A Jim M-75 is allways useful to improve the reception in the UHF Airband.

I use the "classic" discone antenne. In my opinion stil the best solution, you only need 1 antenne that covers the whole frequency spectrum. And the reception in combination with my 3 UBC780XLT scanners is exellent. I use a F-connector 3-way splitter to connect them with the discone antenne. And I don't have any signal loss at all.

Does some of you use log-periodical antenna ? I have seen several months ago some shop selling a log-per from 200 to 400 MHz roughly (but have lost link).
I am also considering Yagi antenna for civil aviation.

So, other experiences would be of interest !!!

I use the 13 elements LogPer of PKW systems and a D-777. Both antenne's are combined to one signal with a SP-3 of RF systems.
In live nearby EHSB and the LogPer is fixed to one direction, from my home to the North-North-East, direction of Nieuw Milligen

Results are that the UHF freq's of DutchMil from my home are better received then when I only use the D-777.

And is the log-per a small, or a big improvment in comparison with the D-777 reception ?

Tempting questions as i do live at approx. 50 km of Semmerzake, home of Belga Radar.

I'm only using a discone for several years now with very good results!

Placed inside the roof as high as possible. I've tried an amplifier as well but I wasn't convinced to use it after all... (Jim M-100).

I'm using this stuff only to receive the transmissions of EHSB and at my
website you can download several mp3-files both civil and mil from this
equipment...

I live about 30-35 km from Nieuw Milligen and have both plane and "ground" of Dutch Mil when the transmitters at Milligen are used.
This is with only the D-777 and also when combined with the LogPer.

Reason I put the LogPer up was that some of the "ground" UHF freq's (ie. 264.325) of Dutch Mil where received with static with only the D-777. After fixing the LogPer these freq's come in loud and clear.

I must say that the logPer is not very high mounted, about 7,5 meters from the ground but it has a clear view to the NNE. I got mine second hand from Internet and the investment worked out good for me.

Then we must be almost neighbours then . I live near EHSB too. I'm planning to put my discone on top of my house, instead of the current location. That's on the outside wall of the first floor. I receive most of the ground comms, but not all of them. I think with my antenne on the roof, that should be fixed.
