Add to that installation costs. KLM do it in AMS, but Transavia had to fly every airplane to England for installation. Only the newer models NG have a stronger wing to support the weight of the winglet, older models need improved wingspars, increasing weight even more.

There are three types of 737 NG wings: The newest need no strengthening, the oldest need it about 1/2 way.
If you fly winglets without changing your FMC the gain is 1 %. If you change the FMC the gain could be 6 to 8 %. Also you have less stress on your engines and can fly lower thrust settings (26 K iso. 27 K for the same TO weight).
You save fuel because of a more efficient wing, which makes that during aproach you don't have to fiddle with your throttles but can stay idle. Also the climb-out is much better. During cruise you can fly at a different angle of attack causing less drag.
The weight issue is not at hand; there are special weights placed in the area just inside the navigation lights and outside the outer LE-slats to counter for the momentweight of the winglet. The stiffer the wing the less weight has to be placed.
Reason why KLM did not want to have winglets is because it made their Classic-fleet look old. Also Boeing does not deliver NG without winglets anymore because of enviromental reasons.
BTW a set of winglets costs about $ 600.000 to $ 800.00, including the job to put them on which makes the price difference.

Can you provide sources for both claims?

The Boeing site lists sizes with or without winglets (-600, -700, -800, -900ER) apart from the models which are not certified for winglets (-700C) or have them standard (-700ER).

Will be in Hg10 on monday, will let you know then

According http://www.aviationphotos.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the BXF is landing around 08.10
and is not going to depart, while the BXK is landing around 08.40 and is to depart around 09.50.

I suppose this means that the BXF is going for the winglet mod[/url]

A bit off topic, but there still aren't any 600's with winglets, are there?
No fuel savings on these?

TIA,
Ard

I guess not, with a range of 5648 km (Boeing specs).

As some 737 classics are still fairly new with the newest only being 10 years old.
Are there any chances that KLM will fit some 737 classics with winglets like other airlines ( Continental, Brussels airlines, Southwest airlines) are already doing.
