Some remarks:

1) with the EU being one market you should always check your neighbouring countries as well (my D300 was nearly 300 euro cheaper in Germany than the traditional resellers in Holland).

2) When travelling to the States via France (Air France) or Germany (Lufthansa) you will transfer there and enter Holland through the 'Schengen' terminal with no custom check at all.

3) I have been stopped once and they checked my camera (which was about eight years old at the time I always carry my receipts with me to avoid the hassle. You could bring false ones, but they might check the serial nrs of you gear and in that case you will really be cooked...

If you do not want the stress each time you travel: do not buy stuff outside the EU or simply declare it, pay 19% VAT and an import fee (which varies for different kinds of goods see: http://www.douane.nl/particulier/internetaankopen/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

In any case: always shop around!

Incorrect. Your luggage does not have a green stripe on the luggage tag indicating it is from within the Schengen countries. You may still be searched!!

I bought my gear at http://www.ac-foto.de 1,5 year ago it saved me 10-15% on the Canon sfuff I need compared to cameraexpress.nl, seems to be the other way around now though.

Incorrect. Your luggage does not have a green stripe on the luggage tag indicating it is from within the Schengen countries. You may still be searched!!

Indeed that is true. Last summer I returned from South Africa on an Air France flight through Paris. On both the flights (to and from South Africa) they lost my checked luggage.

Anyway, when I reported my missing luggage in Schiphol, I was told that once found, customs needed to open my suitcases for inspection. So I had to give the KLM/Air France personnel the key to suitcases. Otherwise they would not deliver the suitcases to my home and I would have to pick them up myself and be present to open them for a check by customs. The argument that I came from France (a Schengen country) was not valid according to them, as my flight originated from a third country.

So this is another very good reason not to leave anything of value in your suitcase!
