Canon 40D or Nikon D300???

I think the biggest advantage of D300 in aviation photography is the new multi-CAM3500DX auto focus system with 51 points, which is the same as in D3. This is much better than the (already very good) D2X/s. A nice feature you can use for shooting flying aircrafts is the 3D tracking with Lock-On. It's not easy to handle but seems to work very well.

About the lenses, I personally prefer the 100-400mm over the 80-400mm since the 80-400mm is AF-D (no internal motor) and not very sharp. For the same amount of money you can try a Sigma 100-300mm F/4 with 1.4x TC. This is arguably the sharpest lens ever made by Sigma, tackle sharp with HSM (internal motor) so focus is equally fast as an AF-S lens. IQ reduction when using with a Sigma 1.4x TC is unnoticeable and focus is still very fast. Search for it (e.g. photozone.de or photodo.com), you'll find only good things about the lens.

Trust me, I had that Sigma 300 EX and if you search well, you'll also find some horrible stories. I had three bad copies and then switched to Canon 300 f4 which I truly love.

One of my spotter buddies has a very good copy though...

Then I don't have further comments though those 3rd party manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron are known for poor quality control. By the way, mine copy is great, almost as sharp as my Nikon 300mm F4 (non AF-S). The only thing I don't like it very much is its colour is less natural and less saturated. But who cares if most of the time you shoot grey aircrafts?

Even een objectief advies: Kijk welk merk camera je vrienden gebruiken !

Als je hetzelfde merk koopt kun je nog eens apparatuur van elkaar lenen en gebruiken. Ook kun je wellicht lenzen overkopen van je vrienden als zij overstappen naar ander glaswerk.

Als je eens op trip bent, en er gaat een lens of een body kapot, dan is het uiterst handig als je kunt terugvallen op je maten. Op die manier is je tripje niet gelijk verloren......

Tsja, en dan nog een subjectief advies: Ik ben een liefhebber van Canon. Van dit merk is zeer veel glaswerk als tweedehands te koop. Veel meer dan van Nikon. Ik heb daardoor een mooie set glaswerk kunnen bemachtigen die ik me anders nooit had kunnen veroorloven.

Verder is het waar dat professionele actie fotografen (sport fotografen) grotendeels met Canon werken. Als Nikon béter zou zijn dan waren de profs op zeker naar dat merk overgestapt. Dat wil niet zeggen dat Nikon niet goed is, maar de profs kiezen veelal voor Canon.

Nou, ik hoop dat je hier iets mee kunt. Realiseer je dat je NU een keuze gaat maken waar je het vele jaren mee moet doen. Daarom zou ik mijn keuze maken voor de apparatuur waar je vrienden mee werken, want op zich zullen de prestaties van Canon en Nikon niet zoveel uiteen lopen dat ze een duidelijk ja of nee voor één merk rechtvaardigen.

Veel nuttige tips lijkt me. Al leg ik een paar dingen anders uit, ik ben het zeker eens met de laatste zin. Maar om 'wat je vrienden hebben' als hoofdargument te nemen, lijkt me wat ver gaan. Het is zeker een belangrijke overweging, maar het gaat toch echt in de eerste plaats om wat je zelf belangrijk vindt aan een camera!
