Most of my pictures were taken through some sort of fence , Mickey ,except for occasions that we could arrange an official base visit for photography reasons : such a day was June 10, 1970 ,when not less than 14 SAAB 105-trainers of the Swedish Air Force visited Eindhoven en-route to the Paris Air Salon : it was then that i made the snap-shot of the two parked F-84F's in the previous message !

Security at Volkel was indeed very tight in the Streak-days and i can remember that i made this photo under rather difficult circumstances in September of 1964 : it proofs also, that 311 squadron Streaks not always flew with only one pylon-tank !

Very true, very interesting. I'll ask my dad about it! They don't have emblems on the tails either, but the cover clearly states 311. Notice these don't have the white rectangle on the nose like the Eindhoven Streaks had in the later years.

I don't think it is on alert, as I think Eindhoven's tasks (CAS and conventional bombing) didn't require QRA. Mickey

I think Hans meant "alert" in the sense of "being awake" at this time; However, EHEH DID have a QRA in those days; it was seldom used but it was there, nicknamed "de schaapskooi" ("sheep's shed") and -if memory serves me correctly- it was half way between the tower and the threshold of Runway 24.

Yes , that is what i meant , Frank : it was just a little bit of a yoke , although that picture was taken in the proximity of what you call "de schaapskooi", so perhaps it was on alert after all ??
I must correct you when you talk of runway 24 : EHEH had two runways in use at the time : 08 and 26 and , later on , when the main-runway
was not usable anymore the parallel taxi-track was used as 08 Right and 26 Left.

Well , thanks for that nice contribution !
According to my information - you may correct me if i am wrong - the first picture was taken at Jever (which was an R.A.F. Base at the time) in Germany on June 21st , 1957 and depicts an F-84F of the "Volkel Team";
the second one is a very rare one because very few colour photos exist of Dutch Streaks with squadron-codes from the period 1955 to 1959 .
"PP-25"of 311 squadron was damaged on February 20th , 1959 (also at Jever!) ; -by the way - who is that litlle child? He seems to be enjoying himself!
The third pic. shows a Streak of 314 squadron , also from the period 1955 to 1959 , so that is a long time ago and well before my active spotting years !

May I add a picture to learn from now? A decent and proper landing of two Eighty-Fours from the Massachusetts Air Guard (U.S.A.);
please note that I didn't take this photograph myself , but that I o w n t h e s l i d e ; if you know the name of the original photographer , please let me know : I will be glad to mention him here !

You're right, of course; got it mixed up with the 06/24 at nearby Schiphol, my current "home station" as spotter. Ah, the famous "fietspad"... and the fence at the 08 end where you could stick your camera through the lines of barbed wire without the need for stepladders...

"Stick your camera through the fence" , that is what we often did!

Towing a Streak was very delicate. It didn't have nose-wheel steering and the guy in the cockpit had to steer with the brakes and brake for the tow-truck, or the nose-gear would get damaged.

Another way to damage a Streak (or any other a/c with a retractable LG) was landing with the gear up. This Volkel Streak had the three tanks configuration... It's just hard to see as they are flat now. The pilot's name was Floor, don't now which serial. Scanned from the 312 diaries.

In my simplicity i thought that towing a Streak was as easy as riding a bicycle , Mickey,although even that can be difficult in today's traffic !

therefore now a serious tribute to the "towing guys"
