Rhodos (Large)

Post by Hopla »

I went to Rhodos for holliday together with my wife. As always we found a very nice appartment (Valsami, room 418 is great) close to the airport. This enables me to watch aircraft when we are at our appartment and listen to the scanner which is my biggest interest.

Frequency used:
118.200 Tower
127.250 Approach

Aircraft are coming from the north or from the east. When from the north aircraft will descend to traffic altitude and land visually from a right downwind. Traffic from the east will land on the ILS.

The most busy day is the sunday. The friday is extremely slow. On Rhodos you will find a lot of eastern europe and russian traffic. I also saw a blue IL96 landing but don't know what it was. Also a lot of scandivian and Austria etc. English planes only arrive during the night on Tuesday to wednesday and saterday on sunday. These are the only nights that traffic was flying.

Unfortunatly the airport don't seem to have a website and it is not possible to find arrivals and departures.

I can give more detail information in case requested.

Now the pictures I made of which almost all are made on Sunday morning and Sunday evening.

32 I saw landing lights from the east when in my appartment. I ordered my wife to run to the car. In the car see prepared my camera. I drove my car over the boulevard the way that even Greek people where surprised. But when I stopped the car I could immediate make this picture.

33 Planes landing over our appartment just on final approach.
Image
34 Our horrible plane on the way to and also from Rhodos. No tv no music really nothing on board. On the way back there was also no water and so no coffee as well :(

Nice trip! Rhodos is a very nice island to see a lot of different airplanes from all countries. I stayed at the same hotel as you did. We flew with Arke fly, but we had leased airplanes. On the first flight we flew with a Martinair A320 (jetix paint PH-MPE), and the return flight we flew with a leased B747-300 of surinam airways (a piece of scrap).

here some pic's

Ah good old Rhodos. Also stayed in a hotel under the approach, my mom hated it but I thought it was great to see the landing lights shining into your room when they came over
