LOG Crete 18 Oct. -> 25 Oct.

Post by Melchior Timmers »

Seen during a non spotting ( ) holiday last week:

Heraklion 18-10-07

NF-5B 4027 stored
F-5A 13371 preserved gate
RF-84F 52-7468 preserved barracks
AB205A 4399 358 MED

Souda Bay 22-10-07

F-4E 68-0424 preserved gate
F-84F 36745 preserved gate
F-84F 11815 preserved
T-33A 58683 preserved gate
T-33A 11x stored next to runway
A310 dark grey (GAF or CAF?), departing
G1159 Seen in US Compound

Kastelli 24-10-07

F-5A 69133 preserved gate
T-33A 58596/TR-596 stored next to taxiway
F-16C 2x red tailstripe (341 Mira?)
The two F-16's were not seen at Kastelli, but some 20 minutes after we left leaving Kastelli towards the north.....

During the flight from Iraklion to Amsterdam we were traced by a C-17A of what looked like the HI ANG, heading towards the Uk. So anyone for the winning number?

Cheers,

Hi Melchior,

Did you read of the serial of the T-bird your self, or only the code?
There should be two codes TR-596 in the (ex-)HAF inventory.
Both have a history on Souda (Crete). The later one, 58596, has a l/n oct'07 as stored on Souda along with 10 others on the taxitrack near the end of the runway of Souda.
On the 3rd of September I noted a T-33 at Kasteli inside revetment #2, nose facing the taxitrack.
You can get a clear view of the aircraft on the road heading from Kasteli to the Lassithi plateau. Just outside the village of Kasteli there is a curving road heading up to the mountains. In the first sharp curve (hairpin bend), near a small village uphill, you can park your car and overlook the airbase from quite a distance. As it was the middle of the day the heathaze did not permit my to positively ID the T-33. Only the code could have been an option with a good binoculair, I only managed to read of "TR-58." and was not sure about the 8 aswell. So might aswell be TR-596 as you state Melchior. So I hope you can confirm you read off the FMS serial on her tail aswell.

Cheers!

Thx Melchior! Okay, then it still is a mistery what ID it will be. Seems like they use it as a tug-tow object. When I noted it, it was parked in revetment #2, and on the same Google Earth picture you can see it parked a few revetments down to the south along the taxitrack.

Let's hope some one will read her FMS on the tail some day...
Thanks any way.

Can the preserved aircraft be easily seen? Other than the T-33 are there any other dumped stored aircraft at Heraklion?

Thanks,

Tim.

Tim,

Other than the stored T-33, Kastelli has F-5 69133 on display at the gate.
At Heraklion you can find:
NF-5B 4027 stored
F-5A 13371 preserved gate
RF-84F 52-7468 preserved barracks

Does anybody have any info on the T-33 at Sitia? Is it still there? Also the T-33 at Timbaki. Both on Crete.

Does anyone know of any other W&R on the island other than the stuff covered in this topic?

I know also of maleme.

Thanks,

Tim.

Wijgert,

What did you see at Kastelli, Timbaki and Maleme exactly?

I am very interested for an upcoming article in AIM (Spotting Group Volkel magazine).

TIA.

Carlos,

I did not visit Timbaki (have been told al T-33 should be preserved on a roundabout in town). At Kasteli I have seen the pres. F-5 on the gate and the stored/GIA T-33 in revetment #2. On a second visit I also noted 4 F-16's. At Maleme the known preserved aircraft wear noted.
Futhermore I payed a visit to Souda and Heraklion.

It was "just" a normal holiday on Crete with my girlfriend, and all the spotting I did was some kind of bonus for me. Still have to make a small log. What kind of info are you looking for? GPS coordinates? Or only the report? When is the closure date for the AIM-magazine?

Wijgert,

Please can you sent me a personal message at : car.geurts@planet.nl

I still have some more questions though, thanks in advance.

The article for the section "Follow Me" in AIM is due for 2008/4 so there is still some time left!

If it is still where it was all the time, you can not miss it, it can be easily seen from the terminal and from the airplane.
