Let's go out and photograph the KLu helo's at Gilze-Rijen

Post by Iwan Bogels »

Hi all,

After seeing the mouth-watering photos from "The Slopes" at Gilze, Tieme and me decided to give it a shot ourselves. We were hoping to shoot Apaches, Cougars and Chinooks against a beautiful background of green, yellow and red colored trees before they drop all their leaves. In theory the entire KLu helicopter fleet is based at Gilze-Rijen these days. This means that a total of 61 helicopters (11 Chinooks, 4 Alouettes, 29 Apaches and 17 Cougars) could be present, although we all know that about 22 helicopters are deployed abroad.

On a beautiful day like yesterday one would expect to see at least a handful of the remaining 39 choppers playing over and around Gilze-Rijen during the day....... Well, you're wrong ! Between 09.00 - 15.00 hrs we saw just a single Chinook depart to the west, and no other KLu helicopters were observed. The only helicopter that did come within range of our cameras was a Bo105 from the KLPD (Dutch Police).

So this was the result of a day out at Gilze-Rijen.....

Best regards
Iwan

PS: I was REALLY happy to photograph the KLPD helo....!

Well, what's new compared to Soesterberg last years, In theory you could see a lot

Too bad it was not your Lucky day Iwan. Colours of the pictures are good, but I miss some sharpness we usually know in your pictures Iwan :?:

Hi Remco,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm going through one of these experimental phases in life again (photographically!), and was taking the rotor blur thing to the extreme with the 300mm lens at 1/125 and even 1/80 shutterspeed but without the IS. To add a degree of difficulty I didn't use a monopod, but stood 5 steps high at a (new) ladder, shooting from the hand.

So what have I learned from this: Rotor blur at 1/80 looks fantastic, but it's extremely hard to produce razor sharp results from an unstable platform. Rotorblur at 1/125 is still nice but at 1/250 it's hardly a real blur anymore.

For your info:

Photo 1 - 1/160 at f20 in 200 ISO
Photo 2 - 1/160 at f16 in 200 ISO
Photo 3 - 1/80 at f22 in 100 ISO

And yes, the total amount of light was absolutely amazing ! (100 ISO - 1/500 - f8 8))

Looking forward to the next test shoot.....

Cheers,
Iwan

That is why i allways use a tripod if possible with helo's or props Iwan :) I'm also very lucky that i have many opportunities to practice these skills as i live near EHGR :) This resulted allready in many nice pics of helo's from some cool angels. IMHO helo photography is still the most difficult photography in aviation because they hover and the use of low shutterspeeds.

Doesn't sound very different to Soesterberg.. Ofcourse Celle has to do with it but Soesterberg also knew a lot of days where you only saw 1 Chinook (far away), a Cougar and if you're 'lucky' a PC-7

I presume this is a normal situation these days at military airfields everywhere...Even Leeuwarden is rather quiet last weeks...

Hi guys,

My original message resulted in several requests about the exact location where I took the images.
To help you all, I have created these directions with the help of Microsoft's online maps (without any
added blur over the airbase, like in Google Maps).

The best link for more details can be seen HERE.

The exact GPS location is +51° 33' 23.42", +4° 55' 44.74". In TomTom you can enter Moleneind, Gilze,
but right now the most direct route via Klein Zwitserland is blocked due to reconstruction works, and you
will have to detour via Gilze Centrum.

At the specified location you will find a mini spotters hill, which will allow you to shoot over the fence.
There are two "Slopes", and you will need roughly between 150mm - 300mm to shoot helicopters at
either hill. The location for the sun is great almost all day long, but you will have to be careful not to shoot
the Historic Flight's hangars.

Hope this helps.......

Cheers,
Iwan

Well, estethically the fall colored trees make a much better background than an ugly, boring and disturbing hangar.......

Don't you think ?
