W&R in Zuid Holland

Hi all,

I am planning a short trip with son and grandson to the motor show at RAI in Amsterdam for next April and as always to make it even more interesting I would like to see some mil or W&R aircraft - no civil. Have been to ROCA at Hoofddorp a couple of times and MLM quite a few but do not want to really go far outside ZH. We are staying near Leiden in het Groene Hart.

Can anyone advise me of anything round and about worth going to see - I think Gilze and Volkel are too far for the short time (4 days) there. Is the Fokker School at AMS worth asking for access?

Have studied EMOOS but any ideas much appreciated.

Aviodrome museum at EHLE/Lelystad is an option if you don't object to civil aircraft being in the collection as well (and if you don't mind that some mil exhibits carry fake c/s); museum holds (non-exhaustive listing)a Buccaneer cockpit section, KLu Tiger Moth, KLu F-104G, KLu Fokker S.11, Fokker S.14, RDAF Hunter (in RAF 4FTS c/s), Fouga of Dutch Historic Jet Association, MLD Neptune, 2 MLD Grumman Trackers (one in KLM-scheme), ex-South African AF C-54 in Netherlands Government Air Service c/s, all-red ex-German F-104G, East German MiG21PFM, Swedish AJSH37 Viggen, MLD Sikorsky S55, RN Dragonfly (in MLD c/s), ex-Lithuanian AF An2, RN Sea Devon (in Martin's Air Charter c/s), RAAF DC-2 (dismantled) and if I remember correctly there's also a KLu Meteor F8 about somewhere. Museum also houses airworthy aircraft, as the Fokker Four (S.11's in KLu or MLD c/s) and the Catalina in (fake) MLD c/s. Best known exhibits are the airworthy DC-2 (which stated out as a USN R-2D), Constellation and the (not quite airworthy) KLM B747. Furthermore, there are several warbirds operating out of EHLE: a couple of Yaks, a French Navy Broussard, a Beaver in US MArines c/s, Mustang "Damn Yankee", a Piper in KLu c/s (and I probably forgot some); also, Stichting Vroege Vogels (Early Birds) have a collection of (ex-)mil aircraft and replicas of the biplane variety. These Early Birds are open for inspection on semi-regular basis, but the best option is to contact them by mail or telephone to make an appointment.

In terms of distance, Lelystad is within an hour's drive of Leiden (Gilze is just a bit more if you stay out of the rush hours...)

OK, usefull update. For my information: does anyone remember then what happened to the Meteor F.8 that used to be in the collection?

Hi guys,

Many thanks for responses. Have also been to Lelystad a couple of times in the past two years but did not want to go quite that far. In studying EMOOS, I see that there is little in the Amsterdam to Rotterdam area and I had maybe thought that there may have been something simply lying about. I had thought about seeing if I could see the Delfin at Bogert near Leiden but do not want son and grandson to be dragged around. Even my grandson aged 9 has done Lelystad, MLM and Hoofddorp.

Do you think it is worth asking for access to Soesterberg (MLM Store)despite there being no Open Day at that time?

Hi Mirage 69,

Not if I can help it! Last time I was there with him, cost me a fortune and in fact managed to spend a fair bit when a friend was nipping in there even when I did not manage. I do want to go there but flight regulations for weight restrictions prevent me. Best shop in Europe IMHO.
