suitable digital camera

Hi lads,

I just got word that i'm the proud owner of a sigma 100-300.
but it'll be my first lens so i have a couple of questions:

1) I want to invest in a digital camera now, but since i only do 2-3 airshows a year i do not want to go overboard but i do want one that will last and is suitable.

2) Most of my regular spotting is done at shannon where military aircraft are parked approx 750-800 meters away from the nearest fence. They are mostly transport but will i be able to get a good enough shot of these with this lens?


Now i realise that everyone swears by their own brand but id like to get some pro's and con's.

If you already have the lens, but no camera, you have to obtain a camera for which the bajonet of the lens is made. So not much to advise. For what camera (canon,nikon,Milolta,sony,pentax) is the lens? Most people first buy a camera, and then a lens, not the other way around. So for what kind of brand is the lens made? BW Roger

I know this is not the usial way of doing it but so be it.

The lens (sigma?) was used on a Nikon camera.

A Nikon d300 would be very suitable for your lense, they're not that exepensive anymore.

That is a very big distance! I don't think you can get close enough with that lens. In my honest opnion a 500 or 600 mm would not get you close enough, or the transport aircraft should have to be of the size of a C-5.
I own a Nikon 70-300 and at about 200 meters I get a nice shot of a 747 or something simular.
A suggestion... if you know someone with a Nikon DSLR camera, just take him or her with you to Shannon and try your lens on that person's camera.
Then you will know how suitable this lens is to you purpose...
