Nice stuff but very cloudy weather, and the German didn't start at 0800 hours sharp

Hi Caspar,

Can you provide me with updates on the situation of the fence ? Below you can see what the situation was like half a year ago, and rumours have it that the fence had not even been finished in October. What can you add to this rumour ?

Curious regards,
Iwan

I drawed a red line as you can see, after that the situation is not changed. The road and parking area within the red area isn't accessible anymore. The little green road to the viewing area at the center of the runway is not there, take the (unpaved) road next to it wich lead to the fence.

Perfect place by the way to take some take-off shot's :D

Hope it's a little bit clear now.

Wow, that is GREAT news !!!

It seems that they only took an area with the size of one shelter area and left the rest of the photo opportunities in tact. If you check http://www.dappa.nl/wittmund.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; you will find that nearly all of these shots can still be made now that the fence has been finished. Maybe (in my dreams) they will create another shelter area and you will get new photo opportunities for aircraft taxiing in and out. That would be something.....! (or just wishful thinking)

I think I will go over to Wittmund again soon.

Thanks for the update,
Iwan

Wittmund will get a new tower in the near future. It will be positioned within the red area.

Wow, THAT big ?!

It makes sense to put the tower on the south side. That way they won't have to wear sunglasses all the time.

What I noticed is that the red area provides the base with 50% more surface area. Right now Wittmund has 20 shelters and several hangars, but looking at the future of the Eurofighter, they might need more. Could I be right ?

Cheers,
Iwan

AFAIK no new shelters will be built. There is no need for it, they have always operated more aircraft than the 33 EF2000s they are getting and never had problems housing them.

A new Eurofighter simulater building (quite a large one) is to be built at Wittmund. Maybe that is projected in the 'new' area as well.

Greetings,
Stefan

Indeed Iwan they can leave their sunglasses @ home. More important: From the new TWR they can oversee all movements in both shelterareas.
In the current situation they can only see some movements
