Dubai (OMDB/DXB) - CIV 2009

Last week a short trip was planned to Dubai. Flight to Dubai on mondayevening (2nd February) was KLM429 operated by 777-200 PH-BQB. After a 05hr44min-flight we landed on runway 12L just before 0600lt. Taxi to the hotel (the wellknown Sheraton Deira in Al Muteena Street) and around 0800lt already installed on the roof (6th floor). No hassle at all, friendly poolstaff is very used to spotters. There is only one rule, stay a few feet off the edge as people on the street might see you and they don't like to see camera's and binoculars.
Runway-use is different every day. Depending on the winds, they land over the hotel on RW12L (and departures on RW12R). Around noon, they start taking off RW30R (landings RW30L) abd around 2000lt they swap again to landings over the hotel. This is what we had for 3 out of 4 days. Only one day it were departures of RW30R all day because of strong winds from the sea (landings RW30L).

The airport itself has 3 terminals, T1 for most foreign airlines, T3 (the new one) for Emirates. Both are at the westside of the airport. T2 is at the eastside and has the more interesting airliners (737-200, 727, TU134/154, IL86's etc.). Also the cargo is located here and all the freighters are parked between passenger aircraft..At the end, bizjets are parked. At the far southside there is a huge hangar for the Dubai Air Wing.

Around 18.30lt is is dark but when aircraft land or depart over the hotel it is still possible to read off the registrations under the wings. The ground area is so lighted that the light is reflected under the wings..

Well, enought talk. Let's go with the numbers. No Emirates included. In 4 days we scored 124 out of 130 active Emirates aircraft, still missing 1 A330, 1 A340-300 and 4 B777-300ER..

The roof closes at 2230lt every day so at that time it was back to the airport to pick up our flight back to Amsterdam. KLM428 left the blocks at 0200lt and landed 0545lt here in AMS, so 06hr45min-flight by B777-300ER PH-BVA.

Did you tried to do spotting from outside the Hotel?

How many mm did you used from the Hotel roof?

There is enough to be seen although sometimes it is quiet as well. I only put the (my..) new ones in the list but most companies fly there every day. Qatar Aw, Gulf Air, Jazeera, PIA, Air India Express, Oman Air do have many daily flights. The more interesting liners come in late afternoon, early evening.

Spotting outside the hotel is not recommended and should only be done very discretely. When it is dark it is getting very crowded on the streets and local people don't like to see you photographing or using binoculars. Departing and landing aircraft can be read off with the famous eyeball Mk1 from the hotelroof (6th floor) so from the ground it is about 25m lower.

Landing traffic needs about 170mm for the IL76, 200mm for TU-154. Departing traffic is much harder to get as they all seem to use a SID that brings them straight above the hotel. Lowperformance climbers like the A340-300, A380 and IL-76 need the full length of the runway and can pass real low..

It was also my first foreign trip where I used my SBS-1E; the aerial/receiver hidden in the bag, the laptop on the table. After darkness, I put the aerial on the edge of the roof and it really helped me spotting. Also very handy during daylight as heathaze could be a problem reading off some of the aircraft.

hi all,

after hard work i'm able to post my LOG from my DXB Trip begin March. As T7 qouted,
(again, many thanks for your effort & tips !) spotting & photographing at the roof of the Sheraton Deira Hotel is easy, no hassels by security or other hotel stuff. I've been outside the hotel also for making photos whenthey were landing on Rwy 30 (approach from the desert), which usually takes place from 12am. i made a lot of photos, but always staying in my car, 2 or 3 times Police
was watching me what i'm doing, at these moments i decided not to take pictures or looking thru my binos . the below LOG is from March 1st till March 8th, and either it
is very loooong, it is still not a complete log ! I omitted all Emirates aircraft incl.Freighters,almost all of them were seeen except 5 or 6 of them..! All in all, an very interesting Airport, although many things have changed since my last visit to the UAE back in 2000, espacially the traffic on the streets is horrific...
i will post some LOGs from Sharjah, Ras-Al-Khaimah & Fujairah (an incredible airfield!! )

Sharjah should be no problem, you can drive to locations where you can see all ramps
except the maintenance ramp in the NW corner. Photography there was done
out of the sharjah National Park, which is located on finals of Rwy 30. it opens 2pm, on weekends earlier. i stayed around 3 hours there and didn't get any problems. Sometimes people walking there around came top me and shaked my hands and just said "Hello"..
Lots of Families with there children are there but as i said, no problems at all.

Ras-al Khaimah wasn't a problem at all, you can read off almost all aircraft over there,
photography was done discretly out off the Restaurant located there in the Terminal.

Fujairah is a bit difficult, of course the most interesting Airport in the UAE (in my opinion), spotting & photography is hard. During my visit i logged about 70 aircrafts over there, almost russian stuff but also some US 747s and military also. On the famous hill you have to be quick, i was hasselt by a Man in camouflage and with a gun just 10 minutes i was on it. Decided to go as fast a i can, and going into the Terminal Restaurant, where i could make a shot of UP-DC102, a Deta Kazakstan DC-10 which
was parked there in front. More difficult than 10 years before, there is a "new" ramp
behind the hills and another one facing the Rwy. You can read off most of them when
driving around the runway, where a small sandy Street leads along the whole Rwy.
i decided not to go there because a sandstorm was blowing at this time. Gladly
i get a lot of tie ups from a guy who was there 2 hours after me.. i didn't feel safe
all the time i was there, but it was worth of course !

The situation has not changed since my visit at those airfields. I agree that Fujairah is the best field in the U.A.E. but also the hardest place to spot. When i was there with our group and was taken pictures, our whole group get questioned about our activeties at the airport. After this incident we left the airport.
I'm wondering if you have seen any An-12's flying in the U.A.E. or are they al grounded in the different storage areas ?
Some U.A.E. based An-12's have been spotted in Ukrain but not all of them !
So i'm hoping to see your logs (and mayde pictures) from Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah and Sharjah.
