That is called an afterburner, it just looks weird because of the dark backdrop, flame stages are visible.. :wink:

That's not what an afterburner looks like, whatever the backdrop (not on an F-16 at least).
It's also visible in Chris' shot with a light backdrop. It looks more like a Mig 21 kind of afterburner :P

They are equipped with the f100-pw-229 engine which is more powerfull.

I see those afterburners almost every day. This is not a usual afterburner look. Maybe there is nothing wrong but it certainly isn't an every day afterburner-look.

i have to agree with mr. leeuwarden.. it is looking weird to me as well...
My first impression was "hey it this AB looks like an F-111 burner"
I think it is the engine related as well...

Maybe read my post!

Its another engine.

The f-16 mlu is equipped with the PW f-100 220 which is less powerfull. The block 52 is equipped with the f100 229.

Then you have to read my message as well..because i agreed that it is engine related AS WELL.
But neverless it is still a strange burner even if it is engine related or not.. i didn't saw it before...
or maybe i have seen to less Block 52 F-16's :-)

Just my two cents,

It looks like a number of nozzles of the afterburner spray ring are not working. only the lower ones.

Dunno what F16 that is.
If I recall, that Greek F16 has bigger engines and stuff.
Maybe thats him ?
(Or just ignore if i'm completely wrong about the machine)

edit.
(Being new on the scene, I guess with block 52 you DO mean that Greek flying machine)

If it is normal for the F-15D block 52 why did the polish F-16's at last TLP have a normal afterburner (like every other F-16)

The picture looks more like a malfunctioning afterburner than a normal one.

Might be a new feature to reduce fuel consumption ;-) (And might be the answer to the question too.)

Question to the witnesses: was the flame 'wobbling' (like a MiG-21 flame) or did it stay in the lower part of the exhaust?

You could send the picture to PW, with the question 'is this normal?'

EDIT: I wrote GE instead of PW. (Although GE is probably more interested in malfunctioning PW pics ;-))

The flame was in the lower part of the engine all the time.
Below one more picture(bad quality) from behind, perhaps some expert sees a clue, i don't .
