Re: RNLAF C-130 Hercules - G-988

Post by kiwi »

Sorry for the Dutch but if I read someone else's message in Dutch I automatically respond in Dutch also, I'm bilingual :)

English:
Indeed the RNLAF fleet is getting less colorful with the years. It seems the RNLAF have chosen this path and stick to it (not only the roundels but whole aircraft like C-130's/Cougars.

What's the news on the second Cougar that was seen in the paint hall a few weeks back to be painted grey like the S-454? I almost doubt that's really the case as the S-454 went abroad for the paint.
And are there still rumours about a grey Chinook? Or was that pure speculation?

(Answers have been given already by Fulcrum :))

I thought this forum was in English...

Why all these doubts? All these questions are answered very clear in previous messages. There was a whole topic about the clourscheme of the Cougars and Chinook.
Despy this is off topic I'll answer the questions again:
S453 is not painted at FAS, just primered. It arrived at FAS in pieces and left a week later in primer to the other side of the field (Woensdrecht). There it is, or will be painted grey. This is true, don't worry about it, I saw the Cougar at FAS in the paintshop. Besides the paintjob, the helo will undergo a 12 years inspection which will take several months. The S454 was painted in Germany because of the fact that the previous paint (car paint, remember the tiger colours?) was very hard to remove and a very expensive job. It was the cheapest to do at a company in Germany. The airforce decided to paint all Cougars and Chinook helicopters grey, that will take place during major inspections. I don't know when the first Chinook will be painted grey.

Alright :) One more question, don't know if you're able to answer this but:
Will the new Foxtrots be delivered in green or grey by Boeing? :O

It's on the updated (today) participants list of the RIAT, only available for Mach members. I gues it's operated by Marshalls on request of the RNLAF.

If the request is from the RNLAF, I think jb5 is one of the first three people to know, even before RIAT.

How could I know? I assume the RNLAF is smart enough to let them paint in the right colour. In the other hand: FAS would be happy to repaint them! You don't seem to be very happy about the new colour standard, but don't forget the reason why the RNLAF want to paint them in this new colourscheme.

I think the new F models will be grey.
Yesterday I saw some picures of these helies D-890 and D-891 and some had already grey parts (rotorheads).
The pictures were seen on a Defense intranet side, so I can not help you with a workable link.

For the heli's: Dont't be so sure about it: The reason why they paint 'm all grey with a special, easy to remove grey paint, is that they can change the colourscheme for missions in other environments. So for missions in Afghanistan you can expect dessert colours.

I wouldn't count on that. I have to see it with my own eyes to believe that. At the moment I can't believe the DoD (MvD hier :P) would see the added value of a desert scheme and find it worth the price for desert paint, certainly with the budget cuts the past years.
But I don't rule it out, I'm just not getting my hopes high yet.

You are a very sceptic person, aren't you? But I can assure you that it's the main reason why they change the colour scheme. The grey paint is cheaper and more easy to remove. Also: The "radar absorbent" (the reason why that paint is so expensive) paint they use now has lost it's purpose, because the most threatning missiles for the RNLAF Cougars are heat seeking.
