Upgrading Canon 20D to 50D

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading my 20D to a 50D. I have been reading reviews on the internet that the 50D is good, but its not much of
an improvement to the 40D. Does anyone have any opinions or experience with these cameras?

The thing that i like about the 50D is that it takes photos at a very large resolution (4800xpix) and i need that for my photography.

I've also bought an EOS50D, not as a replacement but as an extra extra body next to my EOS20D. Main reason to choose the 50D over the 40D was the extra dust protection measure (any dustspot on a picture ruins my sleep). I've read a lot of EOS40 vs EOS50 comparisons before I bought it and the overall conclusion was that the picture quality was equal. The large resolution won't get you better prints nor better website pix. In fact, the bigger file size can be a real pain in the ass. I've had to buy a new ultra-speed 8Gb card and the free harddisk space is shrinking at an alarming rate.

For large poster printing it would be better though right? You can then also crop the photo with out loosing too much quality?

How big do you want them to be? A 8MP camera will print at A4 format at 300 DPI without any need to resize. For A3 size prints you just need a little bit of resizing (or dropping the DPI), but really not that much. More MP is in my opinion only useful if you regularly print at A2 size and bigger, and still want to have 300 DPI. And even then you won't lose much in quality from a proper resize . . .

So unless you plan to print often and really big, I don't think you have a reason to upgrade to the 50D. There may be other reasons though.

Noise levels, sharpness and pixel density determine how far you can crop without noticing the dropping quality.

betere stofbescherming op de 50 dan op de 40? waar heb je dat gelezen?

Ik heb trouwens gelezen in een zeer uitgebreide tests (ik meen op dpreview) dat de beelden van de 40D (hoewel zeer minimaal) vlgs hun test beter zouden zijn dan die van de 50D!

als je 40D goedkoper kan krijgen dan een 50, zou ik voor de eerste gaan. het verschil is hoe dan ook superklein. (ongeacht goed of slecht!) of wacht op de opvolger van de 50D. (de "60D".) Dat kan niet lang meer duren

It's a while ago so I can't remember where I read the about the extra dustprevention measures that were added to the 50D, but if I'm not mistaken they were also mentioned in the release notes by Canon. I remember the dpreview report suggested that pictures taken by a 40D were slightly better than those by a 50D, but the author also cautioned the reader: since the resolution of the shots differed so much, there was no real possibility to compare them at the same croplevel.

I've seen excellent shots taken with EOS40D and EOS50D so I don't think image quality should be a reason to pay more. Like I said: for me the dust prevention was the most important thing and features like the DIGIC IV and the big bright screen were additional benefits.

I have a 40D and am not very happy with the quality of the LCD screen.
The low resolution, has very little contrast, especially in bright conditions.

For that I'd go for a 50D, if I had to choose.
Unfortunatly that choise was not available when I bought the camera.

I'm with Streep!! Same here! Good camera but absolutly sucky LCD. For quick assesment of the picture it is NOT usable, you have to zoom in max, and then zoom back a notch too see THE actual sharpness, colors suck more than a Nilsfisk vacuüm-cleaner. My friend has THE 50D and i really use that a lot. 40D supposed to be faster and better ISO to noise results so make up how U are going to use it. (en dit had allemaal in het Nederlands gekund )

Beetje off-topic, maar komt dat nu omdat ik een fotograaf van de oude stempel ben (uit het dia / film tijdperk) dat dat hele LCD display me niet kan boeien? Het is dat dat display ook nodig is voor het menu, maar mijn foto's erop bekijken doe ik werkelijk helemaal nooit. De ervaring heeft me inmiddels zoveel geleerd dat ik bijna altijd wel weet wanneer de foto goed of niet goed is op het moment dat ik 'm maak. Als ik twijfel over de scherpte, dan maak ik er nog een. En als ik twijfel over de belichting maak ik alsnog een belichtingstrapje, net als vroeger. Werkte toen al perfect en nu nog steeds . . .

Oude stempel ? Ja dat kan, maar ik gebruik dat wel hoor, is al een beetje voorpret voor mij. Omdat ik vaak dingen uitprobeer geeft het me ook een heads-up als ik een setting vergeet. Gebeurd soms wel eens, maar steeds minder. Als er dan toch een LCD op zit dan liefst een goede. Afijn, ik kreeg mijn 40D als vervanger voor de 30D opgestuurd die niet te repareren na 14 maanden dus ik mag niet klagen eigenlijk. Dat is wel een wereld van verschil qua camera functies etc, maar je maakt met beide goede foto's!
