(notes: although a serious illness made planning of this year’s UK spotting tour rather sketchy, I finally made the decision to realize a 24 hours journey to England in order to maybe experience departures of maybe the last RIAT of my life. Contrary to latest weather forecasts, the departure day was dry and also featured some sunny spells. Although the number and quality of participating was once again down to previous years, there was still enough action to make it one of the most impresse airshow departure day of the year. My personal highlights were the three Swedish Gripens, three RAF Typhoons, four Jetstreams, three Harriers, two Royal Navy Lynx and four Royal Navy Sea Kings, six USAF Hercules’ including three Special Ops versions, plus pairs of Mirage F.1CRs, A-10s, F-15s and RAF Tornados including one nowadays very rare F.3 variant. All in all a very good day!)

(notes: as flying activity at Fairford ended rather early at mid-afternoon, there where some hours left to spend in England in a useful way. As me and my spotting companion had observed two VC-10s departing Brize Nortan at early afternoon, I thought that there was a chance that at least these two aircraft might make up for some action at the RAF strategic transport base. Indeed, thanks to some patience, both VC-10s came back after overflying the airfield in close two-ship formation and even performing a two-ship landing approach. Some visiting Hercules movements and a B-757 from New Zealand completed this small but very interesting log and my UK spotting trip 2009)

Hi Richard,

I see you saw an VC-10 taking off at 9.05h (XV109/Z) while you were at Fairford. Where did you got that serail from?
I saw that tanker also from Fairford but an sbs radio-log says it was XV107. If anyone can confirm XV109 was the one from 9.04/5h ???

Serials from the flying tankers from Brize seen during the RIAT departure day are as following.
All are from a SBS-log from Oxfordshire:

9.04h 1x VC-10 = RRR2314 XV107/X
11.14h 1x C-17 = RRR6628 ZZ173
11.40h 1x Tristar = RRR3249 ZD950
13.15h 2x VC-10 = Tartan11 ZA148/G and Tartan12 XV101/S

Additions for RIAT dep:
A-109E 2x ZR322 and ZR323 32(TR)sq (12.22/09.17h)
Lynx AH.7 and AH.9 (09.55h) XZ195 and ZE380 both 672sq
CH-53G 84+58 MTHR25
S.King HU.5SAR (12.21h) XV648/CU-818 771sq
Lynx Mk.4 272 French Navy 34F
