Small trip to Serbia Part 3 (final)

Post by jurgen »

Part 3 of 3 with perhaps some tips for those guys and gals deciding to go to the Batajnica show in September.

03aug09 LY02 Belgrade School
J-1/J-21 Jastreb (24127) Belgrade pres as '1924', blue/grey c/s
L-17K/MiG-21bis-K 17104 Belgrade i/a
P-2/J-20 Kraguj (30143) Belgrade i/a White/blue c/s
The school was closed for the holidays, so was the gate. But the next door neighbour was roofing and he let us use his stepladder and roof to take pictures of the MiG. From there the J-20 was also partially visible.

03aug09 LY09 Bubanj Potoc
F-84G (10561) Bubanj Potok pres
F-86E ... Bubanj Potok pres
Whirlwind HAR.5 (11905) Bubanj Potok pres
Still visible on top of the hill behind a small arms shooting range across the street from the barracks.

03aug09 LY20 Bubanj Potoc
HT-41/Mi-2 (12505) Bubanj Potoc std as YU-HEJ
The owner of the truck yard is a bit of a Mi-2 collector and works on them himself. One of his Mi-2s is almost airworthy and a second is to follow soon. The only former military one had made a hard landing some time ago and fell on its left side. It is in use as a spare source. Other Mi-2 present were: (HA-BFE, UR-20801 ntu) 527923112, (HA-BCW) 526309089, HA-BFK and HA-BFT plate with 20657 in cockpit.

03aug09 LY01 Belgrade Airport City
TJ-2/INJ-22 Orao 2 (25606) Belgrade pres 'Airport City / Stari Aerodrom'
A large temporary fence is built around the building site holding this Orao, taking pictures is therefore a bit difficult.

03aug09 LY08 Vidikovac
C-47 (71245) Vidikovac std Dismantled
Last W&R call of the trip and the second visit to this location in less than twelve hours. This Dakota used to be a bar/restaurant and the owner of the nearby car scrapyard let us have a look inside. Inside all original bits have gone, including the cockpit, so no further identification was possible.

03aug09 LYBE Belgrade IAP
Li-3 (7)011 Belgrade IAP std
Dakota III (KG803) Belgrade IAP std as YU-ABI
Yak-40 71505 SMATSA act 'SMATSA Flight Calibration Service'
Da50 YU-BNA Government act
N-60/G-2A Galeb (23170) as YU-YAB civil Camo c/s
Yak-40 (71506) as YU-AKW civil
AB212 (YU-HCA) MUP Srbije civil Camo c/s
Whilst waiting in the terminal we saw a green Bell 212 landing at the airfield, near the fire station.

03aug09 EDAF Frankfurt
C-54E (44-9063) Frankfurt (D) pres 'Rosinen Bomber'
S-58C (B12) Frankfurt (D) std No markings
C-40C 05-4613 73rd AS act
Upon arrival at Frankfurt we noted the blue/white C-40 at the general Aviation ramp. It departed soon after we arrived in the terminal. The S-58 is near the mock aircraft of the fire department. We assumed it was the Belgian one, which used to be preserved on the viewing pier.

It was a real shame that both shows of the original itinerary had been cancelled and even more as the ‘best’ was cancelled last minute. Because of this not many operational Serbian aircraft were seen during our stay. On the other hand we saw over 200 (former) military aircraft at 27 different locations, the majority being seen at the excellent museum in Belgrade. Many of these W&R could be photographed without any problems. A lot of the smaller airfields also house a couple of An-2s or other interesting smaller aircraft.
Compared to last year, more decent hotels have been built in the Belgrade suburbs. These are very good value for money. The hotels in the centre of town are mostly very old, need to be upgraded and are expensive. The roads have not improved a lot, but it looks like they are working on that too. All in all we had a pleasant stay in Belgrade, saw lots of aircraft not usually seen in ‘the west’, enjoyed a good meal and good company of those joining this 4Aviation trip.
